Maximise your Avios, air miles and hotel points

My experience with Tesco’s ‘150 Clubcard points for a £50 gift card’ promotion

I posted recently about Tesco’s low-key “earn 150 Clubcard points when you spend £50 on gift cards” promotion.

It is an easy way to earn 600 Avios or 625 Virgin Flying Club miles and possibly reach the 650 points you need to earn this quarter to get 2,000 bonus Avios under the ‘Get More’ promotion.  See full details online.

I decided to give this a try today, and this is what I learnt:

There is no in-store branding for this promotion, at least in the Tesco Metro I visited. This means we don’t know when the promotion ends, and you will be taking a small leap of faith by taking part as gift cards are non-refundable.

You can mix-and-match gift cards to get to the £50 spend. I bought £20 of Cineworld, £20 of Top Shop (Christmas presents!) and £10 of National Book Tokens. Note that Tesco and Visa gift cards are excluded.

You can use a conditional spend coupon with your purchase. I had a ‘£3 off £30 spend’ coupon and it went through OK, so I paid just £47 instead of £50.

The 150 points go onto your receipt instantly.

The 150 points are NOT bonus points. They replace the standard Clubcard points you earn when buying gift cards, which are usually 1 point for every £4 spent.

All in all, I am happy with my purchase. I was hoping to get some Pizza Express gift cards as well but the store didn’t have any, so I will try to find some elsewhere in the next couple of days.

This is exactly my experience (albeit from last week). I assume there is no indication when this promotion finishes? I couldn’t see anything on the website.

No. And I don’t trust Tesco to update that page of their website the same day that the promo is pulled!

    still working tonight 🙂

I was lucky enough to receive a rare ‘£10 off £50 spend’ till spit yesterday (likely because I almost never shop in store). Worked pefectly on a single purchase of a £50 HOF Gift Card, 150 points also showing instantly.
