40,000 point sign-up bonus for the Priority Club Black Visa card

A mailshot drops through the door for the Priority Club Black Visa card. It directs me to www.priorityclub.com/aug
This promotion offers 40,000 PC points for signing up. This is a big jump on the usual 20,000 points, although there is a generally available offer for 30,000 points currently being advertised in Holiday Inn and Crowne Plaza reception areas (link on the ‘Credit Cards Update’ page).
This offer is obviously 10,000 points better. However, unlike the last version of this offer, they are NOT offering a fee refund this time. You have to pay the £99 annual charge.
In theory, only people who received the mailshot should use the 40,000 point link above. However, I doubt you would have any problems using it, and indeed people who used a targetted link last time around received the special package without difficulties.
Is the card worth it? Well, it is not a life changing deal. 40,000 PC points is worth about £200 of free hotel stays. You will get 4 free nights at a modest Holiday Inn Express (eg Hull) but less than 2 nights at a major Holiday Inn, Indigo or Crowne Plaza.
It is not even enough for one night at a major InterContinental such as Paris or London, which now run to 50,000 points. You can also buy 40,000 PC points for $280 using the ‘cash and points and cancel’ trick, so you would only be £85 or so better off by using this route.
The real benefit is that these 40,000 points count for status, which they wouldn’t if you went via ‘cash and points and cancel’. You only need 60,000 points to reach Platinum status with Priority Club, so this would get you a fair chunk of the way there.
As a spending card, it is OK but not fantastic. I have not given it a full review yet, but I value PC points at 0.5p each. 2 per £1 means you are effectively earning back 1% of your spend, which is acceptable. You also need to remember that the card is a Visa, which is more widely accepted than the American Express offerings which dominate the loyalty card market.
More interesting is the ‘free night voucher’ you get after spending £10,000 on the card within a year. If you redeemed this free night at, say, InterContinental Paris it would be worth £250 on a good day. That is an extra 2.5% of your spending back, on top of the 1% you would have got back in the value of the regular points. However, £10,000 of spend may not be easy to achieve and you need to offset the £99 fee.
All in all, I am not over-excited by this promotion. However, if you were thinking of getting the Priority Club card anyway then 40,000 points via the above link is better than any other deal currently available.
