About 250 of us were gathered at Vinopolis in London last night for the ‘Avios 1st Birthday Celebration’ event!

This was organised by wine merchant Laithwaites, who have a shop in the same complex and, of course, run the Avios and BA wine clubs as well. There were around 50 different wine vendors represented, each of whom had 3-4 different wines to try – the ticket said there was 160 in total.

All of the staff I spoke with worked for the actual winery and were able to talk knowledgeably and passionately about their wines. It was difficult to pick a favourite (and the mind does get a little cloudy after a while!) but I was particularly impressed by:

Spier, S.A.: Wine No 101, Drakenskloof Chenin Blanc 2012, Western Cape WO

Taste Tunnel: Wine No 114, Sunday Bay Sauvignon Blanc 2012, Marlborough

Le Chai au Quai: Wine No 31, Chateau Le Coin 2010, Bordeaux AOC

If you ordered any wine on the night, there was a 10% discount and 1,000 Avios for a case of 12 bottles or more. Oh, and there was a very tasty cheese stand as well!

(Disclaimer: this party was a free event for Avios collectors. However, whilst most people had to apply via a ballot for tickets, I was given mine directly by Avios.)
