How to add an icon to your HfP comments

Links on Head for Points may support the site by paying a commission.  See here for all partner links.

It seems that it was September 2021 when we last explained how to add an icon to your comments on HfP.  Apologies to anyone who has spent the last 18 months wondering how to do it ….

You probably noticed, when reading the comments to a HfP articles, that replies from our team have the blue HfP logo next to them.  Some posters also have their own avatars which appear by their comments.

If you want to have your own icon next to your comments, it is easy to set up.

Add gravatar to comments

What you need to do is go to https://en.gravatar.com and create an account using your email address.  You can then upload your preferred avatar to Gravatar, by going to ‘Add an Image’ under ‘My Account’.

There is nothing else you need to do.  As long as you give the same email address in your comments that you use with Gravatar, your image will automatically appear next to your comments in the future, and against all of your previous comments.

It may also appear on any other WordPress-driven sites you visit depending on what comment software is installed.

Feel free to post a test comment under this post if you want to try it out.  Your avatar is active immediately once you have registered and will also apply next to older comments.

Let me be the first to try !

Is gravatar not just another organisation trying to get our personal data, with absolutely no benefit to us?

    No thanks.

As you may remember, we got rid of them when we launched the redesigned site in 2020. We hate them because every single image requires a ‘call’ to gravatar.com, so loading one page with 50 comments requires 50 external calls just to load the page. We are looking at hundreds of thousands of requests from HfP every day with the expected impact on site speed etc. (For comparison, the entire HfP home page only requires 74 ‘calls’ to load the page because there are no comments.)

However, we had huge reader pushback on scrapping them – probably the heaviest we’ve ever had over a change to the site – so they came back.

Excellent – I won’t be alone in some threads any more. Thank you Rob.

I still have no idea why my old email which worked with gravitar got stuck with post approval in the comments

I’ve no idea how to change my Gravatar, it’s silly but I kind of like it 😂

Off-topic but forum related – what happened to the search feature? It’s been broken for over a week now.

We upgraded the main site search (which excludes the forum). Turns out that this wrecked the forum search. We have a plan but still deciding on best way technically to do it.
