Coutts customers lose their easyJet loyalty rewards

There seem to be two types of people out there. Those who have heard of Coutts only by reputation and believe it to be some super-flash private bank for the rich and famous, and those who bank with Coutts (or know someone who did) who know that it is a frankly useless organisation that is little better than its Royal Bank of Scotland (ex NatWest) parent!

The reason for this post is that Coutts has decided to close its ‘Courtesy of Coutts’ credit card loyalty scheme. March 28th is the last day to earn rewards points for transactions posting to your account. (Note – transactions must post by that day, not be undertaken on that day.) You will then have up to June 28th to spend your points.

In typical banker speak, Coutts is closing the programme:

“in response to feedback received”

because, of course, people have been banging their door down telling them to scrap their loyalty scheme.

Or perhaps they have ….

What do you think the travel rewards are for Coutts credit card holders?

Avios? First Class rail tickets? Private jet discounts? Luxury villa rentals?

No – easyJet flights!

Well, easyJet flights or discounts at that famous luxury travel agent, ebookers! As the Coutts website says:

“Whether visiting a second home abroad, taking the family for a weekend in the mountains or arranging an extended, multi-destination holiday, you’ll have options to hand.

We have selected travel partners to make it as straightforward as possible for you to get the most out of your points. With ebookers.com and easyJet, there are many possibilities for travel both within Europe and around the world.”

Words fail me. If you happen to bump into the Queen on an easyJet flight in the near future, you will know that she has burning the last of her Coutts points.

    Funny post!

But there’s a third kind of people – those who never heard of it!

    Haha

We did see Lord Lichfield on an easy jet flight once……

Sir David Frost was on our Cape Town flight last January. Bit embarrassing that we were in F and he was in Business. However, he has a Concorde Room card from BA so he still got into the lounge with us.

And we were behind Boris Becker at Terminal 5 bag-drop in December!

You are not wrong. As a client, I consistently gave feedback that the easyjet rewards were irredeemably naff. You could also get a few other things such as wine under Courtesy of Coutts, but it’s a bit of a swizz they haven’t come up with anything better to replace it.

The Coutts World card costs £350 per year. Apart from the (seriously diminishing) snob value, you get a concierge service provided by Ten UK and a few other bits and bobs including travel insurance on which I discovered – to my cost – the cover was not as good as the policy my wife got as a freebie with her Natwest account!
