Amex / Foursquare 2013 …. what I’ve discovered so far

Links on Head for Points may support the site by paying a commission.  See here for all partner links.

So, how is the American Express / Foursquare 2013 promotion going for you so far?!

(See here for details of the current deals if you are new to this.)

On Wednesday I picked up 6 x £50 gift cards in Harrods, and on Thursday I got 3 x £50 in House of Fraser.

I learnt a few things:

Harrods

I probably made a mistake in Harrods by buying 6 separate £50 cards with my 6 Amex’s.  A comment on Flyertalk said that the Harrods tills cannot process more than 4 gift cards when you redeem them, so I can’t use all 6 at once on that basis.  The only workaround would be to buy a £200 gift card using 4 x £50 gift cards and then redeem that!

I’ve already had Foursquare notifications for the BA Amex and Amex Platinum transactions.  I got nothing for the Lloyds TSB cards but that is par for the course.  I have always got cashback on the Lloyds cards before even without receiving notifications.

The T&C’s in the original email on this promotion said that only Harrods Knightsbridge was included.  This presumably means that purchases at Heathrow do not count, neither do online purchases.

Harrods gift cards cannot be used at Heathrow according to their website, but they can be used on the harrods.com website and at all bars and restaurants in the Knightsbridge store.

You cannot double up on Harrods Rewards points.  Whilst they will swipe your Harrods Rewards card when buying a gift card, it does not earn points.  You will earn points when you spend it.  However, as you need 500 points (£500 of spend) to earn any rewards, it is not worth it if you don’t plan to visit the store again this year.

House of Fraser

For House of Fraser, I went to the Victoria store.  This is the store that time forgot – I can only assume they are tied into a lease they can’t escape.  It never has any customers (at least outside lunchtime during the week) and only about 1 in 10 tills is manned.  A large part of the basement has been sublet to Gap.

Looking at the receipts, the House of Fraser gift cards are valid for two years.  This gives me confidence to buy another 3 gift cards – there is no risk of not being able to spend £300 in 2 years, even if it all goes on cosmetics for my wife!

House of Fraser gift cards can be used on their website.  Yesterday, I used £53.99 of my new balance to buy a new smart cover for my ipad.  For some reason, House of Fraser is discounting their remaining ipad smart covers by 10%, so if you want one then take a look online.  Quidco cashback is also available.

You cannot buy gift cards online to trigger the bonus – the website confirms that they go through as ‘Voucher Express’ and are delivered by a third party.  It is not clear if other houseoffraser.com purchases will trigger the Foursquare bonus.

Comments elsewhere have focussed on the fact that the Oxford Street flagship store does not offer the ‘special’ on Foursquare.  However, people have successfully ‘checked in’ at Victoria Street and spent the £50 at Oxford Street and got Foursquare notifications.

The Victoria House of Fraser has a fantastic off-licence on the top floor!  There is a surprisingly decent selection of premium wine, spirits and a very wide range of champagne.  The champagne seemed a little pricey, but only because supermarkets are so aggressive these days.  Cloudy Bay Chardonnay 2008 was £21, which was only £1 above Laithwaites.

I did not check if you can earn Recognition points in their loyalty scheme for buying the gift cards – I have enough points balances to juggle as it is!

Other offers

The other current deals are (ending 28th February):

  • GAP – Spend £50, Get £25
  • Banana Republic – Spend £50, Get £25
  • Carphone Warehouse – Spend £25, Get £10

Plus the three older offers which are still running:

  • Starbucks – Spend £10, Get £5 (to 13 February)
  • Pizza Hut – Spend £30, Get £15 (to 6 March)
  • Shell – Spend £50, Get £15 (to 18 April)

I am deliberately giving these a miss, though!  I can’t do everything ….

Hi, I had issues using 6 gift cards at a time too. Only 5 would swipe through initially. However, after 2 sales assistants tried for a while, they decided to go to another til, and all 6 gift cards were loaded against my purchase! So definitely do-able, though it would seem it isn’t uncommon to have issues.

Unsure if 4S works for online purchases at Harrods, I also understand their is a £5.95 delivery charge.

I am going next week, will purchase a £200 GC and pay £50 x 4 cards. Had a rewards card from a while back although lost it, does anyone know if I could pick one up there and then registering it afterwards?

I know with the likes of HoF you can buy a Giftcard with a Giftcard, so that is a route to extend expiry? I wonder what other participators in this promo we could do the same for…

    • Raffles says:

Yes, you can get a temporary Harrods Rewards card at a till and register it later.

  • Cliff says:

Would it possible to check in at one CPW and then shop at another and sill receive the credits ?

  • Trevor says:

As opposed to Raffles, I found the off-licence section at HoF Victoria pretty small and dismal. Their single malts were rather pricey and, like Harrods, they generally offer the more rare and exclusive bottles which are going to cost a lot more, so no chance of buying standard bottles at half price (well, not even as little as half price considering their mark-up).

Alternatively, the Harrod’s offie is much larger, yet I was still disappointed by their choice of reds in general (too much French for a start…), and again the more obscure single malts on offer around the £99 mark.

The Harrod’s techy section is ok, though just offers standard stock (I require more choice, will see what more is on offer via online shopping though). There is no tech in HoF Oxford St, while Victoria seems to be all but closed.

Although gift vouchers are generally accepted at most concessions, at both Harrod’s and HoF they are declined at the Bureau de Changes – apparently since the vouchers are non refundable and hence buying “cash”, even in a foreign currency, would be seen as a refund 🙁

In agreement with Raffles, the HoF Victoria is in dire need of an upgrade – it’s pretty shoddy and choices are limited. But if you can check in there yet still shop at Oxford St and have it tracked, I won’t be returning and don’t suggest any of you do.

    • Raffles says:

I think you’re being a little harsh! It clearly isn’t in the same league as Harrods or Selfridges wine shops, and even some way behind Harvey Nichols. However, if you like drinking decent quality stuff then you won’t struggle to spend your £50 here. If I had to fill a wine cellar from there then, yes, you’d definitely be struggling, but £50 was genuinely no problem.

(Spoken by someone who spent £75 of his free Harvey Nichols money on £25 bottles of white wine, and who may well end up spending the remaining £50 on some more!)

For someone who usually spends, say, £6 on a bottle of wine, you won’t pick up any £6 bottles here and so pay £3. However, you can buy plenty of £12 bottles which should get you something far more interesting for the same price you usually pay. Look at it like that.

  • Peter says:

Are all Shell garages in England included in the Foursquare/AmEx special?

  • mikeact says:

I wondered why, two credits have not shown on my Amex Statement. Here is their response which is a little confusing, as a) I have already synced my card to 4Square, and received email confirmation, and B) received email confirmation of my syncing from Amex.

“I see that your account is synced to these offers however these offers have not been loaded correctly. That is the reason the credit has not appeared on your account. For your reference I have mentioned the steps required to load an offer correctly. I assure you that if you follow the steps advised below the credit will appear on your account automatically within 5 business days:

    – View specials in foursquare. Check in at location with an American Express special
    – Click the Special. Click “Sync My Card” and enrol in offer. The offer will load to the Card
    – You will be prompted to allow a set of standard foursquare permissions to allow for personalized deals to be displayed based on their likes. Click ‘Allow’.
    – The system prompts for your name, email address, and American Express Card number to sync your Card.
    – Enter your name, email address and American Express Card number when prompted. By providing the Card number, you enable us to recognize when promotions are loaded to your Card and to issue an automatic statement credit upon completion of the promotional criteria. We will not share your or any personally identifiable information with foursquare or any other third parties. A confirmation screen displays acknowledging that your Card has successfully synced.”

In each case, I did the same thing…arrive on the premises, located the special and ‘Checked In’ and received the standard acknowledgement, but obviously I went wrong somewhere, but where, I am now not clear.

    • Raffles says:

First, you do not need to do the check-in at the store. This is just Foursquare spin. You can do it sitting at home, as I do.

Secondly, checking in is not enough. You then need to click on the special and do ‘load to card’. Your phone will say ‘offer loaded’ or similar in an orange box.

Did you go through the full ‘load special to card’ process?

  • Neil says:

Cheers raffles, got my starwood amex which was featured on your site, will get 25,000 avios for that, synced 2 cards and got my iPad mini for £219. Thanks.

  • Tommy says:

Had a strange experience at harrods yesterday. I purchased a £100 gift card using two different amex cards(virgin and gold), for some reason the gift card did not load correctly, so they refunded £100 on to one of my cards. I then bought a £50 gift card on the card which received the refund. I received foursquare confirmations on both accounts, so I think I may have got two £25 credits, and only spent £50!
