Maximise your Avios, air miles and hotel points

Next week – some semi-live writing from New York

Links on Head for Points may support the site by paying a commission.  See here for all partner links.

Next week is half term for a lot of UK schools, including ours.  My wife and kids are off to Germany to see their (grand)parents and – if you’ve got kids – you’ll know that an opportunity for some quality ‘me time’ cannot be wasted!  I therefore decided to spend a few days next week in New York.

(Assuming, of course, that ‘Snowmageddon 2’ does not turn up next weekend in New York, cancelling all flights for days.)

I was very lucky and managed to get all the flights I wanted, for the days I wanted, on miles.  I am flying First Class on Lufthansa to New York (will I get the new F seat and bed combo, above?) and back to Germany on airberlin in Business.  I’ve also got four nights in five star hotels.

The total cash required for all this – ie airport taxes – is just £213!  Starting my trip in Germany has certain financial advantages, without a doubt.

As this is not a family trip, I will have time to write as I go, instead of running a few articles weeks after the event.  This is, however, offset by the limitations of posting and photographing with an iPad.  Keep an eye on the site next week to see how I go on.

    Hi Raffles

Have a great child free trip! I am taking my 17 year old for the tennis finals in September pre-uni with avios 2 for 1 in First and priority club point at Times Square staybridge

Look forward to reading your posts

    Cheers

    James

I am there with the family next week staying at the Staybridge. Also hoping that the snow holds off.

Hope you guys have already booked the Staybridge if using points, as the rate increases next month. I tried to book dates there for May recently, however despite being available online on points, this was not the case over the phone (necessary to book via the old rate), so in the end I gave up, treating myself to the IC Time Sq instead.

        Hi

I booked at old rate then needed to add two extra nights so had to phone to get those at the same rate.. Wasn’t a problem though

        Cheers

    Hi Raffles,

The Lufthansa seat and bed combo is only on the 747-400, so if you’re not on one of those, you’ll be out of luck I’m afraid. That said, the new seat on the A380 and 747-8 still looks great, so I’m sure you won’t be disappointed either way.

    Enjoy!

    • Raffles says:

I have booked a 747-4 precisely for this reason (and because I like sitting upstairs!). It seems only 1 of the Frankfurt fleet of 747-4’s does NOT have new First Class, so the odds are in my favour …. hopefully!

  • Zoe says:

Very cunning plan Raffles, you score Brownie points for travelling to Germany and back with the kids, but still avoid a week with your in-laws!

  • Zoe says:

Next years score even more points by leaving the kids with their
grandparents and taking your wife on to New York with you…

    • Raffles says:

It may be possible next year! The youngest will be nearly 3 by then (as opposed to nearly 2) and so easier to leave behind!

  • Paul says:

I’d love to try out Lufthansa first. How did you collect your points?

    • Raffles says:

Honestly not sure – I’ve had them for ages! I think its a mix of having had the LH credit card for a while some years ago (with a decent sign up bonus), some hotel transfers and a few business class Star Alliance flights a few years ago. However, I asked myself the same question and couldn’t be certain!

  • tom says:

Do you know maybe if al BA flights to NY have already the new FIRST class ? Or is is there some exceptions like on Lufthansa?

    • Raffles says:

New York is a premium route and one where you are basically guaranteed new First because BA will pull out the stops to find a suitable plane. Looking at Flyertalk, 81% of the B777-2’s are done, all of the B777-3’s and 73% of the B747’s.

Have a great trip.I recommend you ditch the ipad for a galaxy note. Better still, ditch both the ipad and iphone for a noteII smart phone. I did this a few months ago and it was best tech decision I ever made. I no longer need to drag even a tablet around and I have found the noteII far superior to my old 4S.
