For the last few months – possibly as a response to those who complain that their taxes and fuel surcharges are crazy – Lufthansa has been running a monthly list of discounted routes for collectors of Miles & More miles.

The March list of discounted Miles & More redemptions from the UK is here.

Given how high the taxes are, the European redemptions are still not great value.  Neither are the long-haul Economy destinations.

Lufthansa A340

Of the long-haul routes, Abu Dhabi for 40,000 miles return in Business is a good deal, especially as the booking period covers Easter.  Remember that it is a very short bus or taxi ride down to Dubai.

The following routes are also massively reduced in Business Class:

  • Atlanta
  • Beijing
  • Bogota
  • Boston
  • Dallas
  • Delhi
  • Doha
  • Khartoum
  • Montreal
  • Mumbai
  • Muscat
  • Nagoya
  • Osaka
  • Philadelphia
  • Seoul
  • Tokyo
  • Tunis

You need to book by 31st March, for travel completed by 16th April.

Whilst Lufthansa’s business class is not the greatest (unless you get a 747-800 with the new fully flat seat), you will also get the discounted prices on Austrian and Swiss where they fly the same route.  Austrian is rolling out its fully flat business class seat and I think Swiss is now 100% fully flat.

My Dad booked a flight on Lufthansa using Miles and More, he noticed the tax he paid was more than was on the website for a standard booking, when he rang up the lady on the phone told him they increase the taxes on the bookings made on the Miles and More flights as they don’t make any money on the actual flight!

While I always enjoy these offers in theory, if I ever try and book them (even just as a test), I can never get any availability. Maybe it’s just a Malta thing.

Isn’t it UP to Dubai? 🙂
