Maximise your Avios, air miles and hotel points

Tesco brings back its HP printer ink deal – 500 Clubcard points (1,200 Avios) when you buy two

Links on Head for Points may support the site by paying a commission.  See here for all partner links.

I have absolutely no idea why this promotion keeps coming back in one form or another, but every few months it re-appears.

Tesco is offering 500 bonus Clubcard points when you buy 2 Hewlett-Packard printer inks.  That is good for 1,200 Avios or 1,250 Flying Club miles, or 40%-50% more if you wait for another transfer bonus.

Full details can be found here.

The cheapest cartridge at the time of writing is £7.99.  You are therefore looking at £15.98 for two, assuming you ‘click and collect’ in a store.

Ignoring the base Clubcard point and the miles earned on the credit card purchase, you are paying (1598 / 1200 =) 1.33p per Avios.  This is not a bargain, but is cheaper than BA’s current ‘buy Avios’ price.

And, of course, you can sell the cartridges on eBay.  This should bring your net cost under 1p, and if you save your Tesco Clubcard vouchers for an Avios transfer bonus then your cost per Avios could be as low as 0.6p.

If you wanted to be really cheeky you could pop the brand new cartridges into a Tesco recycling bag and bag yourself a quick and easy 480 Avios.

    • Scott says:

Interesting idea! It looks like Tesco have changed their links though, as every time I click on one to learn more about the ink recycling scheme, it redirects to some pants site about corporate responsibility which tells me nothing!

      • chris says:

heres the only link i could find to they recycling partner, tho its not really worth it to recycle newly brought inks (find if your going to personally use them, than get 100 points when empty), but your do better just ebaying them, also tescos dont currently take the 364 inks (the cheapest ones)

        • Scott says:

Thanks for the information Chris. Think I’ll give it a miss then as it doesn’t make it worth while if you have to buy the more expensive ones anyway.

        • David Butcher says:

I have submitted two requests to that site for recycling envelopes using their pro forma and have received absolutely nothing. Not impressed!!!!

          • chris says:

yes they do suck at sending envelopes out, (i use they paid site for inks not for points) and altho they never do send any envelopes when requested, i just print out they free post labels and use my only jiffy bags *at a cost of 3p or so* they do track them at the right amount when they received them normally with in a few days, (dunno if they pay or not yet as they have a £20 min pay out currently im at £18 or so) *only use them for personal used ink have done for about 2 years, dunno if they do a printable free post label for the tesco side of things tho*

  • Adey says:

Just a note – I wasn’t able to select “collect in store” when attempting to order a couple of the cheapest ink cartridges. The only option was the £3 standard delivery. The “collect in store” option was there, just not selectable.

  • Mark says:

Hi there. I am wondering if people could double the bonus points with a “GET DOUBLE POINTS” voucher you sometimes get send with a clubcard statement or separate with a Tesco coupon/voucher booklet. Anyone any thoughts on this? I also received an additional GET DOUBLE POINTS WHEN YOU PAY WITH YOUR AMEX CARD voucher. The guy at the checkout said that works together with the other double points voucher, therefore multiples it x4. Would be a lot of points then if you i.e. could combine it (or at least one of the double point vouchers) with an ink cartridge bonus points offer here and there over a year. @ RAFFLES…this also would be a suggestion for your Q&A topic from ysterday. Thank you.

    • Mark says:

…I meant to say a suggestion for Q&A topic on how to best use double points voucher un combination with bonus point offers.

    • Rob says:

It only doubles base points, sorry!
