Starwood Preferred Guest now only sending membership cards on request

Starwood Preferred Guest – the Westin / Sheraton / W / aloft etc loyalty scheme – is one that many Head for Points readers will be elite members of, since Gold status is a free benefit of the American Express Platinum card.

(By the way, if you DO have SPG Gold via Amex Platinum, remember that you need to re-apply for the Gold status each year.  You do have it for as long as you hold the card, but you must contact Amex each year once you are dropped down to the base level to boost yourself back to Gold.)

Starwood SPG

Starwood has now decided not to send out Gold cards automatically.  This does make some sense – your number will automatically be in any booking you make online anyway (although not all corporate travel agents are efficient at adding in numbers for employees).  And printing and posting membership cards around the world is not cheap.

Instead, Starwood now offers ‘MyCard’.  Via this website, you can design your own Gold card from a number of pre-set images, and then download it to the Starwood app on your iPhone or Android phone.  Or – if you really insist – choose to have a card posted to you.

My SPG gold seems to have auto-renewed itself. If I use the SPG iOS app, it shows me as Gold, and if I pick “My SPG Card” that shows “Valid Until 2014”. Possibly the advice should be to check in about February, and phone Amex if you’re on of the unluck ones who didn’t have it come through!

    • Alan says:

Mine is still auto-renewing fine too, as it has for the past couple of years. Also no issues with CC Gold either, which some other folk reported lapsing.

Handy to have the app on your phone not so much for hotel stays (where it’ll already be in the booking if booked online) but instead if dining at SPG proprerties and wanting to get credit.

They used to send out ‘thank you’ cards with your memberhsip card that you could give to employees who had provided really good service – guess they must have killed off that? Shame as I quite liked it.

  • Insider says:

Hi Alan – the thank you program is still going to be available. It is just going through a bit of a refresh right now. Stay tuned!

    • Alan says:

Thanks, that’s good to know – I think it’s a nice touch to be able to thank staff who’ve gone that extra mile.

    • Rob says:

Thanks for the semi-official feedback. Feel free to contact me if you have any promotional ideas that Head for Points and SPG can work on together. I know they have done some interesting things with some of the US blogs. At the moment I don’t even get SPG press releases ….
