Points balance tracking service AwardWallet launches a new super-fast Apple app

Last September, I wrote a long piece outlining why I like AwardWallet.
As I wrote then:
“Once you have got a certain number of loyalty accounts, it is very easy to lose track of what you have in each. This is especially true if you also control accounts for family members.
There are a number of programmes around to help you keep track of what you have, but the best by far is AwardWallet. I have been a fully satisfied member myself for some time.
AwardWallet is easy to explain (there is even a video linked from the home page you can watch). It allows you to store the log-in and password details for pretty much all of the loyalty programmes you are in (American Airlines being the main exception.) It isn’t just travel, either – Nectar, Boots Advantage, Tesco Clubcard, Harrods Rewards …. they cover over 500 programmes from across the world.
You can store programmes for various different people inside one AwardWallet account. When I log in, I see 57 different accounts across my family. A clever part of AW is the ability to sideline schemes which are dormant or rarely used, so my ‘Active’ tab contains a more modest 35 accounts.
You can sit and back and do nothing with AwardWallet if that is how you want to play it. Once a week, AW will automatically log in to each of your programmes and update your balance. It will then send you a weekly email with all of your balance changes.”
The reason for this post is that AwardWallet has just launched a new iPad app. And it is lightning fast.
The old iPad app had a huge problem – you could only update your balances one at a time, which was useless if you had 50 programmes stored.
The new iPad app now lets you check all your balance in one click, and it takes a fraction of the time of the desktop programme.
I just ran a test on the 48 programmes I store. It took just 30 seconds to check 47 of the 48 balances, just hanging for a short while on the 48th. The destop version is substantially slower, taking a couple of minutes (although it does run in the background if you are doing something else).
As I wrote in my original article, some people have security concerns over AwardWallet. Frankly, I don’t. If you can get happy with the security issue, it is a fantastic utility which is well worth trialling. The basic product is free and you can ‘pay what you like’ to upgrade to the advanced version which tracks the expiry dates of your points.
