Getting the best use from Miles & More miles

I write quite a bit about Miles & More, the Lufthansa frequent flyer scheme, on Head for Points as it is the logical place for a UK reader to put their miles from Star Alliance flights.

It is not necessarily the best place, but that is a different article for a different day.  I cover much of the ground on picking the best Star Alliance frequent flyer scheme in this article.

Whilst I covered my recent Lufthansa First Class redemption (see seat photo above), I haven’t written much about how to get the best from the Miles & More programme.  That’s why a post from US site MileValue caught my eye.

It is worth a look if you’re looking to redeem Miles & More miles.  For example, I didn’t know that there are no fuel surcharges via Miles & More when you fly on US Airways to EuropeI had also forgotten that LOT, the Polish airline, is now flying 787’s to some destinations with fully flat beds in business class.

Ignore all the credit card references in that article, as they relate to the US credit card only.  The UK Miles & More card is now back to its pathetic 1,500 mile sign-up bonus!  You could, however, get 25,000 Miles & More miles by getting the SPG Amex under the current 20,000 bonus points sign-up deal and transferring them to Miles & More.

Really annoying how many great offers the yanks get for their credit cards. Wish our banks would start competing more with miles offers.

Like it or not, this is still the 2nd best country in the world for miles offers. Take a look at the rubbish Germany etc has.

Another excellent item that I would have missed without HfP! Thank you.

Perhaps I should delay the downgrading of my M+M credit cards (mentioned in another thread) so that I can book an Avios first/biz one way fare to the US returning on US or LO using M+M miles. 🙂

Slightly OT, sorry… I’ve got a small balance of orphan miles in a Miles&More account – 5000 to be precise, 4000 of which expire at the end of June. I’m unlikely to add to these – I’ve got a Turkish Airlines flight next month but I don’t plan to use Miles & More as my Star Alliance programme of choice; I’ll probably credit to Turkish or Aegean. As far as I can see the only thing I can do with them is donate them to one of Lufthansa’s worthy causes, as other spending options start from 7500 miles. Does anyone know of any other options?

Not at this level. £20 of Heathrow shopping vouchers for 7,500 miles via BAA WorldPoints … could you transfer 2,500 miles from a dormant hotel account you have?

      • Mark says:

Unfortunately I’ve only got a bunch of hotel accounts with piddly amounts of points in them, none of which reach the threshold for transferring.
