Amex Platinum cardholders – are you getting mysterious double and triple points?

Links on Head for Points may support the site by paying a commission.  See here for all partner links.

When three people email me about something, then something is definitely ‘up’!  For the last few weeks, some American Express Platinum card holders have been mysteriously receiving bonus Membership Rewards points on transactions.

Travel (of any sort) is going through at 2 points per £1

Bars and dining is going through at 3 points per £1

Annoying, I haven’t used my Platinum card for a while so I haven’t seen this in action myself.  However, it wouldn’t be the first time that Amex has given bonus points for ‘secret’ promotions!

Has anyone had an Amex Plat email announcing any promotion on travel or dining?!

If not, is it possible that Amex is actually changing the earning rules on the Platinum card?  It would make sense, since at the moment the Gold card gives 2x points on travel, supermarkets, petrol and foreign spend, whilst Platinum only gives the usual 1 point.  (See here for full details of the card.)

Giving 2 points per £1 on travel would also help placate Platinum card holders – many are annoyed about having to pay for airlines and hotels with an Amex card in order to qualify for the full Platinum travel insurance package.

Or, of course, is it all a big mistake by Amex?

If you’ve got any experience of these new bonuses, or you’ve spotted any other categories of transaction which are giving bonus points, please post below.

My Gold card bonus points have been all over the place recently.
Flights with FlyBe were attracting no bonus (soon fixed by customer services).
Virgin train tickets were attracting double base points (but no bonus points).
Stays at a Crowne Plaza attracted double base points and the same again as a travel bonus (so x4 points).
Supermarket petrol gets x3 points – with the first year bonus listed twice.

No idea what’s going on – but my points balance has been rocketing due to quite a few recent hotel stays!

  • andy21 says:

I seem to be getting double on some travel related things (W Hotel, Verifone taxis, Hertz) but not all, only got single points with BA. And some restaurants, including Leon which I’d used as a shop small visit is coming in at x3, but so is the refund, taking off 15 points. Why do Amex not tell people about these promotions, they are effectively wasting the points as they aren’t encouraging us to purchase if we don’t know until after we have made the purchase!

  • RB says:

Sorry to do the proverbial on the Plat holders’ parade (:-)) but as others have posted, I’ve just come back from a week’s holiday to find that spend at Nando’s and Costa have both attracted 3 x base points on my GOLD CARD (but no bonus points)!
PS – just had the annual membership fee charged last week having just completed my first anniversary with the card – does anyone know how long it takes for the 7,500 bonus MRs to credit? Also, anyone have any inkling when a bonus is likely to come up for transfer of MRs to any of the partner airlines?
    Cheers
    RB

    • Rob says:

From other reports, the 7500 bonus should hit within a month of paying the fee.

I wouldn’t be surprised to see some transfer bonuses in September / October, but of course they are likely to be targetted so there is no guarantee you will be invited.

      • Louie-m says:

I asked Amex about this and was told the bonus would be posted when the statement for the month after my anniversary was sent out.

  • Jack says:

Interestingly, on Gold Business card travel seems to be posting at 2 points per pound…

A BA POUG did, and I’m just waiting for a Hilton transaction to go through and see if that posts double.

    Either way, thanks Amex!

Re: Homebase – I crashed their tills when I used 10x £25 giftcards to buy 10x £25 3v cards! Their supervisor was not happy, and told me that the small print said I wasn’t allow to use Homebase giftcards to buy 3v cards!

Re: MR on platinum – I got double points on all hotels last month, but just the standard 1 point per £1 for shopping at Tesco

    • danksy says:

I hit enter too quick! I had no triple points for bars/restaurants though!!

  • Paul says:

Just checked over my statement, looks like I am getting 3x points on all the bars I visit. Looking over the statement has also make me a little scared about the amount of bars I do visit in a month!! Although surely triple points is more of a reason to go out in the sunshine!

All around the city of London.

  • Mary says:

I have an amex plat.. just checked and double on my stays on hotels (whether booked via amex or not), haven’t noticed any bars, but most bars I go to don’t take amex…

  • Thunderbirds says:

Still on my first year of Gold AMEX and have just reached £11k spend for a total of 42k MR points including bonus. Vast majority posting x3 as my wife has a card and she spends most of her time abroad. Odd retailers post x1 so I use BA card when I find those and one x4 which was my purchase of Ambassador status. Still another 8 months to go so a target of 100k MR points looks achievable with the help of the end of year 7.5k bonus.
