Maximise your Avios, air miles and hotel points

3V cards are still alive and kicking, surprisingly

Links on Head for Points may support the site by paying a commission.  See here for all partner links.

I spent a few days last week up in North Yorkshire, taking the kids to their grandparents.  I was more than a little surprised to wander into the Tesco in Filey to see 3V cards on the gift card rack.  Annoying, though, there was only one of them!  However, in the 5 days I spent in Filey, that solitary 3V card was not purchased – although, sadly, neither was the rack topped up.

(3V cards are an amazing way to earn literally free Avios.  You can buy 2 x £25 3V Visa cards for £50 in Tesco, spend them online to pay £50 of bills, and earn 150 Clubcard points – 360 Avios – each time.  See here and here for older posts on this which explain everything.)

Simon emailed me to point out that 3V has finally added Tesco to its list of official stockists – which presumably means that they aren’t about to go away tomorrow.

Another Flyertalker also posted this:

I got 36 in Bournemouth on Monday afternoon (left 1 on the shelf) and 20 from Swansea the week before (left about same again on the shelf)

…. so supplies are certainly not low everywhere.

Ironically, the card that I saw in Filey last week was the first that I have seen in the flesh since the very first day I saw one, in the Covent Garden Metro.  For old times sake I popped in there again this week …. but the shelves were bare.

my local tesco did not have any last week, which was the first time ever that they have been out.
I thought this was the end, but yesterday, as raffles says alive and kicking

  • Scott says:

One of mine got restocked last week for the first time as far as I’m aware. 3 left at present after I bought a few so might as well pop in and buy 2 of them.
Used a £10 off £70 spend voucher yesterday to drop the cost of a couple of them to make things sweeter (couple of shopping items mixed in as well including some milk that had 85 bonus CC points).
Haven’t checked the other local store yet.

  • Nodrog says:

My local stores did a restock every 3 weeks but since the end of June this stopped. The same apllies to the full range of cards so i am hoping the stockist is just on a long summer break

  • Toby says:

    I think I’ve just had an idea…

Homebase is on the list of official retailers, yes? Buy Homebase Gift Vouchers in Tesco (2x£25) and get the 150 points. Then use the homebase gift vouchers to buy 3V Cards in Homebase and collect (Nectar?) points again…. ?

I’ve not tried it but would it be possible?

    • Rob says:

Some people have tried this. Homebase gift cards cannot be used to buy other gift cards – it says this on the back. Some Homebase shop assistants do not enforce this, but others do.

    • Eric OMara says:

I did this last month with £50 worth and got Nectar points too. It does however say on the back of the card, that it CAN NOT be used to purchase “gift cards”
So its probably down to individual checkout op or store.

    • Dan says:

When Homebase had their 15% off everything the other weekend, I bought £300 worth of £25 Homebase vouchers in Tesco on the Saturday morning (and got the Clubcard points). I tried to spend them on tiles in Homebase on Saturday afternoon but the cards hadn’t been activated! I had to buy the tiles on my Amex in the end. Apparently it takes up to 72 hours to activate the Homebase gift cards you can buy in Tesco. I didn’t realise this, and I probably wouldn’t have believed it if someone told me.

Anyway, the point of my story is that I did manage to use my Homebase gift cards on the Tuesday after to purchase 3V cards, and the assistant put them through without question.

    • Mr Bridge says:

homebase is now whited out on 3v website

  • Jay says:

I am planning to buy Nexus from google play store. And play store does not accept Amex ( in UK). I guess I should be able to buy Play gift cards from Tesco using my Amex Nectar card and get bonus CC points.

If I am buying £200 worth gift cards, should I be buying in 4 different transactions or just one transaction of £200 fetching 4×150=600 club card points ?

  • bill says:

my local tesco doesnt stock gift cards at all. i’ve looked in boots but they dont stock 3v. they have another visa brand which runs at almost 10% premium. i will have to travel further afield

  • Jonny says:

I found some too yesterday, for the first time since I started looking (a few weeks ago). Perhaps a number of stores were restocked yesterday.

Tentatively bought 10 to see how it works out, though much to the chagrin of the guy behind me (whom i did warn!), particularly after the woman in front had produced a novel-sized pamphlet of vouchers…

Am I right in that they can be invested in national savings products?

  • Arabmoney says:

The guys who are saying there are loads in stock are the same guys who are going in and clearing out the 30+ they have on the shelves and leaving one. because they cant collect the 150 cc on an odd number.

its first come first serve on these, you really need the hustle if you want to get any.

    • James67 says:

You can say that again! Wednesday I found around 20 cards in my local extra. I took 8 of them to check-out and thought I had nothing better to do than immediately turn around and pick up another 8. Imagine my shock and disappointment to find they were all gone. Seems like I was not her only HFPer around early Wednesday morning! Lesson learned, from here on in they all go to check-out with me on sight!
