Maximise your Avios, air miles and hotel points

3V cards are still alive and kicking, surprisingly

Links on Head for Points may support the site by paying a commission.  See here for all partner links.

I spent a few days last week up in North Yorkshire, taking the kids to their grandparents.  I was more than a little surprised to wander into the Tesco in Filey to see 3V cards on the gift card rack.  Annoying, though, there was only one of them!  However, in the 5 days I spent in Filey, that solitary 3V card was not purchased – although, sadly, neither was the rack topped up.

(3V cards are an amazing way to earn literally free Avios.  You can buy 2 x £25 3V Visa cards for £50 in Tesco, spend them online to pay £50 of bills, and earn 150 Clubcard points – 360 Avios – each time.  See here and here for older posts on this which explain everything.)

Simon emailed me to point out that 3V has finally added Tesco to its list of official stockists – which presumably means that they aren’t about to go away tomorrow.

Another Flyertalker also posted this:

I got 36 in Bournemouth on Monday afternoon (left 1 on the shelf) and 20 from Swansea the week before (left about same again on the shelf)

…. so supplies are certainly not low everywhere.

Ironically, the card that I saw in Filey last week was the first that I have seen in the flesh since the very first day I saw one, in the Covent Garden Metro.  For old times sake I popped in there again this week …. but the shelves were bare.

I’m at my holiday home in Wales, the Tesco Extra which is about 20 minutes away has restocked their 3v cards in the last week.

  • Nick Burch says:

My local tesco hadn’t had any 3v cards for ages, but earlier this week I managed to spot a couple there. The tesco a few miles away has had 10+ twice in the last few weeks. of which I’ve bought some but not all! Last time I was chatting with the guy on the checkout while scanning them through, who mentioned he’d seen a few people buying loads of them in one go and didn’t understand why. I tried to give a one sentance explanation, not sure how sucessfully… Does imply there are other HfP readers out near me trying the same thing!

  • Mitpat474 says:

I found around 70-80 these past two weeks , i think in total i got good frw hundred discarded cards – ill take a pic for you to post raffles 🙂

  • Jamie says:

I also keep my eye’s out for these, found 10 in Boots and probably picked up 25-30 in various Tesco’s.

There’s usually a bit of drama at the till and I’m never a good person to queue behind !!

One Tesco’s refused to sell me 8 unless I paid cash, had to make a big fuss which involved the duty manager calling someone who was on holiday who told her it was fine. In Boots one of the 10 cards I bought did not activate, rather than cross checking all the numbers they just let me keep the extra card.

Sometimes wonder if it’s worth the hassle but I’m trying to trigger the 2 for 1 on my wife’s BA card so will keep buying for now.

    • Eric OMara says:

Can you explain the benefit of buying these from Boots?
Are you buying Boots vouchers from Tesco, or is there another way of collecting Avios via Boots?

      • Dan says:

Just to get points via the credit card you purchase them on, or to reach a minimum spend on a credit card.

      • Sinizter says:

I would still get 1.5 points/£ on my AA credit card.
Others are using them to reach the spend threshold for bonuses, 2-4-1s, etc.

      • Rob says:

Let’s you use an Amex card to pay a bill where Amex is not accepted, or where credit cards are charged.

Take the Revenue. They only accept Visa / MC and charge a 1.4 per cent fee.

Using 3V from Boots effectively lets you pay a tax bill with Amex for zero fee, as the cards are treated as a debit card by the Revenue.

  • YL says:

I have not seen them in any Tesco Metro in London yet….
I tend to visit those in central London and have not had any luck.
Not sure if they have been cleared out or they just don’t stock them.
Those Extra Store tend to stock them, but the problem is it is a bit far for me to get to and even if I make all the way there, the chance is that they have already been cleared out by one of the regular.
You really need a bit of luck to find those cards in London. It is like a lottery:-)

  • andy21 says:

Do you have to buy in separate transactions of £50 to get the 150 clubcard points or can you buy say £100 in one transaction and get 300 clubcard points? And should I expect my points to post straight away (within a day or two) or is there a bit of a lag?

    • Dan says:

Just buying in a single transaction is fine and you will still get all the points. The bonus points will be shown at the bottom of your receipt and go into your account as normal within a day or two.

  • Scott says:

I find them handy for Amazon as you can’t really get points etc from them.
Buy the 3V cards and get CC points etc, then use them to buy Amazon giftcards and you get the best of both worlds.
Been paying off a BA holiday with them as well. Might as well get a few extra Avios out of it. Takes a bit of this though as you have to login to the BAEC, enter card details and your address and once it’s done, you need to log back in again and repeat. Takes a minute or two tops per card but no real hardship.

  • andy21 says:

One more question – do most websites allow you to enter more than one card to pay for something – ie say something is £100, can you enter 4 of these cards at £25 to settle the bill?

    • Rob says:

Yes. Only exception seems to be some Barclays-run credit cards where for fraud reasons they restrict you to 2 cards a day, 5 cards a month.

      • andy21 says:

Oh that’s great, thanks for that. So it’s ok to use them to pay off credit cards then on-line?

        • Rob says:

Look at the link in the post to my early posts on these. There is a list of all places that knowingly accept them, apart from online shops. Only Priority Club and Hilton credit cards, issued by Barclays, accept them.
