Clubcard points (=Avios) now available from standalone Esso garages!

Back in March, I reported that Tesco and Esso had agreed a deal to give Clubcard points on fuel purchases at Esso garages with a Tesco Express attached.  You had always been able to collect Clubcard points on purchases from the Tesco stores at Esso.  As from March, though, your petrol purchase also earned you points – albeit at the modest rate of 1 point for every £3 spent.

Tesco and Esso are now deepening their relationship.  They are rolling out their arrangement to ALL Esso garages, whether or not they have a Tesco store attached.

Tesco Esso

Unfortunately, it is a complex scheme to explain.  Put simply:

This scheme is being rolled out.  Your local Esso garage may or may not currently offer points.

At Esso stores without a Tesco store, you will earn 1 Clubcard point per 2 litres of fuel.

At Esso stores with a Tesco store, you will continue to earn 1 Clubard point per £3 spent on fuel.

If your Esso store has a shop attached which is not a Tesco, you may (or may not) receive 1 point for every £1 spent in the shop.  Some garages will not offer points for shop purchases even if they offer points for fuel.

If your Esso store has a Tesco attached, you will continue to receive 1 point for every £1 spent in the shop.

For full details, take a look at this special Esso / Tesco website.

There are also two special offers at present:

Until 29th September, earn double points when you buy Supreme Unleaded or Supreme Diesel – but ONLY from an Esso which has a Tesco attached

As an on-going promotion with no closing date yet, you will earn double points (ie 2 Clubcard points per 2 litres) when you buy fuel from an Esso-branded motorway service station

I hope that is all clear!  However, whilst it is complicated, it is a genuine additional benefit to Clubcard holders and is therefore something to be welcomed.

  1. Not sure if its every station but the one I visited last week said I wouldn’t be able to add the points to my account later ,With a receipt ,as I didn’t have my clubcard on me at the time. If you don’t have the clubcard then and there you miss out..

    • But if you email Tesco, they will probably add them anyway? Say that your clubcard wouldn’t scan or something.

  2. You may not earn points if using a Fuel Card, see the FAQs.

    • I’ve always gotten them but can’t use self-service pumps as fuel cards don’t have Chip&PIN usually

  3. Great news, especially as the Esso right next to the A4/M4 above Kew Bridge is consistently the cheapest anyway.

  4. Would be good to do a comparison chart of Avios/Litre for Shell, Esso and Tesco. Don’t think there is a way to change nectar into Avios?

  5. Small typo, “At Esso stores with a Tesco s,core, you will continue to earn 1 Clubard point per £3 spent on fuel.”

This is my thinking although I use Amex gold card which does double points in your first year
