Get very cheap Avios when you buy HP ink cartridges from Tesco

Tesco Direct has brought back its occasional offer on HP printer ink cartridges – but this time it is 50% more generous.

You usually get 500 bonus Clubcard points when you buy two cartridges.  This time, though, they are offering 750 Clubcard points when you buy two.

To add to the deal, you also get a 20% discount when you buy three or more cartridges.

Note that this offer is also available in-store, if your store is big enough to sell ink cartridges.  I don’t know if the ‘20% discount for buying 3 or more’ discount applies in-store.  However, you would save £3 on postage and you would also be able to use any money-off coupons you may have.

To see these deals, search for ‘HP ink’ on Tesco Direct and – in the left hand margin at the bottom – filter the sellers down to just Tesco.  You can then reorder the list of products by price.

You should, if it is still in stock, see various cartridges with the read ‘Special Offer’ text under them.  The cheapest seems to be this one, a Black HP364 at £9.

So, lets run some maths.

You buy 6 of the HP364 cartridges for £54.  The 20% discount takes you down to £43.20.  Postage is £3 (you cannot collect these instore) so your total cost is £46.20.

Total Clubcard points earned = 43 base points + 2250 bonus points = 2,293 points

Total Avios earned from converting at 1:2.4 = 5,503 Avios

That works out at just 0.82p per Avios.

And, of course, you still have the cartridges.

Let’s assume that you manage to sell the HP364’s on eBay for £4 each, net of fees and postage.  Your total cost will have been £21 for 5,503 Avios.  Note that these cartridges are quite fat and so postage costs are higher than usual, although if you do ‘buy it now’ and say you have six for sale, many customers will buy two or three at once.

Alternatively, you could send them to Tesco Recycling.  This is a lower return but is less hassle.  I believe that they accept new cartridges, and you will receive 50 Clubcard points on the HP364 cartridges as you can see from the list on their site.  That takes your total haul from the 6 cartridges to 2,593 points, or 6,223 Avios points for £45.12.

  • Tim says:

Thanks for this info. I went online to Tesco Direct I have never bought from them before. I got 9x Black Ink £7 each and then entered the £10 off code. Total £43.40 and 3040 CC points.

  • SillyMonkey says:

I’ve done a similar thing (ordered an odd number)!
Surely you should make sure you order an even number (750CC per 2 cartridges)

  • Andy says:

Can anyone tell me the Tesco £10 code that can be used for exisiting customers as TDX-FT6J not working for me?

    • uk1 says:

It is my impression that all of the discount codes work only for new customers.

Thanks Rob for the heads up …. I’ve done 4 seperate x 12 transactions over two Tesco Clubcard memberships which incurs more postage but hope minimises any fallout from the unknowns.

Slowly slowly catchee monkey is my straplan.

      Thanks again.

  • Rup says:

Historically, how many have people managed to buy?

    • Simon says:

I bought 12 – 3 of each colour as I use the 364 cartridges, total price £66.20 and 4561 clubcard points.

    • takke says:

I bought 50 across 4 orders, 3 accounts and 5 products. All went fine, shipped them all of to Amazon for sale and fulfillment and got my cost per avios down to about 0.4p

      • Colin A-B says:

Can anyone ship them off to Amazon for sale & fulfillment, or do you have to already retail with them?

        • takke says:

No, the program is open to anyone – you can just set it up by clicking sell this item on a product page and then selecting the option ‘I want amazon to dispatch this item for me’. The sign up process isn’t complicated, and it saves a lot of time when you have a lot of items.

  • Chris says:

My black inks have been cancelled …

    • Chris says:

      Sorry – should have said they’re 364’s.

    • nux says:

How many did you purchase at once? I did 30 in one transaction which is still pending.

      • chris (another one to avoid confusion lol) says:

i just ordered 28 atm pending tho got the confirmed email

well see what happens if cancel will just make a smaller order

        • chris (another one to avoid confusion lol) says:

just to update to this my online order history is now “Partially Confirmed” witch im guessing means they checking the stock levels by hand and ordering whats needed to cover the order, until confirmed

how many did you order to get an order canceled lol

  • Donald says:

When using Avios, do you think its better to book the RFS with max cash minimum miles? Something like £42.50 and 2250 miles? The fare on the day is £250 one way.

    • Rob says:

If you are effectively saving more than 1p per Avios, it is probably worth it. If the saving is less, then probably not.

I assume you are looking at a one way which is otherwise 4,500 plus £17.50? If so, you are saving 2250 Avios but spending £25 more. I would not do this, as it is the same as buying Avios for 1.1p – something I would not do.

  • Donald says:

Hi Raffles, can you buy Avios for 1.1p from BA? Is it always best to take the minimum cash and maximum miles then?

    • Rob says:

No you can’t. But you can get them via the Tesco ink promo today for 0.8p, for example!

  • chris (another one to avoid confusion lol) says:

    not about inks

just for amusement, tho might save some people posting (since dont really need 100s of posts about it)

just sore tescos have took 5 points off my statement for the diablo 3 refund (witch i see why they bother doing it tho .05p is silly, but when 20000 – 30000 people / copys ware ordered it can be quite a bit)

    • What's the Point says:

Chris – thanks for saving me 10 mins worth of trying to figure out why my latest statement says
      -5 points!
