Maximise your Avios, air miles and hotel points

Accor rolls out improved benefits for status customers – including Amex Platinum holders

I gave Accor a bit of a hard time the other day for reducing the conversion ratio of LeClub Accorhotels points to Avios points without notice. They deserved it.

At the same time, though, Accor has also announced improved status benefits. This will benefit anyone who visits a Novotel, Mercure, M Gallery, Sofitel, Pullman etc hotel.

It is worth remembering that American Express Platinum charge card holders get top-tier Platinum membership at Le Club Accorhotels. This now delivers some genuinely useful benefits.

The key benefits for Platinum members are free internet, early check-in AND late check-out (not guaranteed), a room upgrade (not guaranteed), a welcome drink (guaranteed) and access to the Executive Lounge (this IS guaranteed!).

For comparison, a Platinum previously only got a welcome drink at a Sofitel and did not get free internet, lounge access or early check-in.

Each of the brands in the group is also giving specific extra benefits to top tier members as you can see here. Sofitel throws in a free newspaper, for example. Suite Novotel gives you a courtesy car for four hours.

Here is an overview of the points scheme. Basically, you earn points based on your total. These can be redeemed for Accor hotel stays or transferred into airline miles, including Avios. A Platinum member now receives 8% of their bill back if they take vouchers – a pretty generous return.

Earning Platinum from hotel stays is pretty tough given the ’60 nights or 25,000 points’ requirement. However, as Platinum is given away as an Amex Platinum perk and – occasionally – by Accor itself as a targeted perk – it is not difficult to pick it up.

All in all, this is a big improvement. Compared to, say, IHG Rewards Club, a Platinum member has the added check-in and check-out privileges, a drink and guaranteed lounge access. Lounge access would also mean free breakfast, of course.

I wonder if this will mean the end of the Platinum status targeted offers which always seemed to find their way into the public domain.

My Platinum status from the last offer is about to expire, even being Platinum I didn’t consider the previous benefits to be worthwhile for me to pick an Accor hotel over another hotel unless the price was equal, the new benefits seem to be a huge improvement.

  • BP says:

Do Accor tend to honor status on bookings via 3rd party websites?

    • Beef Cake says:

I’d also be keen to know this too. I have a few Sofitel stats coming up booked through Expedia.

      • Alan says:

Ditto – have an Expedia booking and it’d be nice to know if they’ll honour the benefits – certainly most chains don’t offer points on 3rd party bookings but quite a few do honour status.

  • Andy says:

Would these perks extend to the companion of the card holder as well? IE: would my partner get lounge access if she was staying with me?

  • Dominic Barrington says:

I’m Amex Plat, but my Accor has just dropped from Plat to Silver. I went on the Amex website and did the enrollment thing again – do folk think I can expect to be reinstated to Plat with Accor? I have to say I only ever use Accor for the Sofitel at T5 occasionally, but have not done so for a while (as the main route I fly is TLV, which shifted to T1, but is returning to T5 in April). Like some other posters, I don’t generally find them worth using.

    • Rob says:

You should be. I got my SPG Gold reinstated that way recently and the benefit is meant to be permanent.

      • Dominic Barrington says:

Didn’t take long! The re-upgrade arrived five mins ago!

  • Graeme Taylor says:

So there’s the potential for a room upgrade at all their brands, now? My understanding (and experience) was that this only applied to Sofitel, Pullman and MGallery previously. Given that my budget could never stretch to those properties, this could be very useful to me (for the… 6 weeks of status I have left).

    • Rob says:

That is what the chart implies. However, how well this is imposed is still to be seen. We all know how well the IHG Rewards Club ‘Platinum upgrade’ (doesn’t) work.

    • CV says:

Yup, potential upgrade now available across the different hotel chains, don’t expect much to happen at an Ibis though. Recently upgraded at a Novotel who previously didn’t offer upgrades.

Try requesting upgrade at time of booking in the comments box.

  • Ian says:

I wonder if stays booked via 3rd party booking sites count? Just received email from Le Club advising me that points would be credited for a stay at Pullman Euston because I booked through Hotels.com (£35 a night cheaper than the Accord web site!)

  • Simon says:

Do you think it likely that if a Mercure property doesn’t have an executive lounge, that they now might including the set breakfast for free?

    • Rob says:

Doubt it. They would have made a big play of it otherwise. Individual hotels may have their own policies of course.

  • longpause says:

I went to their website to have a look around re this offer and on logging in it appears I already have platinum status. I’ve never stayed at one of their properties and a bit curious how that happened.
Do they sometimes just offer platinum as a signing up bonus type thing?

    • Rob says:

There were various links earlier in the year which gave Platinum for signing up

      • longpause says:

Thanks I guess that must be it.
Is there anyway to find out which of their hotels have an executive lounge?
I was looking at a few days in the Los Angeles Sofitel but their website doesn’t seem to mention them having one, should I assume that they don’t?

        • Rob says:

I think so. You could also try a dummy booking and see if a room category such as Club Room, Club Superior etc pops up.

        • Gus says:

I stayed in the Sofitel in LA last month. It doesn’t have a Lounge. I was upgraded to a ‘Hollywood Sign View’ room from a standard room at check-in and given two free drinks vouchers for their achingly cool bar downstairs (which turned out to be two glasses of flat champagne, my choice). A nice property all-in-all.

Funny thing was that my Le Club Platinum status had been downgraded to Blue/Classic between me booking and actually staying, however the standard post-booking email I sent to the hotel with my Platinum upgrade request etc. was still adhered to, hence the better room, free drinks and chocolates and fruit platter. Its like they never re-checked my status and just went off of the notes they had made. I only realised I was back to Blue when the bonus points never showed up on my account. Have since been pushed back to Gold for some reason in the past fortnight as well and I have no idea why…

          • longpause says:

Thanks Gus, still undecided where we will stay but good to have a personal recommendation.
We’re only passing through for 2 nights to on the way to a longer stay in Santa Barbara and I’m totally at a loss where to stay, a rare occurrence for me who has an opinion on everything!
