Qatar announces a new Edinburgh service …. a good Avios redemption for Scots!

I have written a few pieces recently about Qatar Airways joining BA in the oneworld alliance, eg here and here.  This gives you a very interesting new option for spending your Avios points, especially as Qatar Airways has an impressive reputation and a growing route network.

Qatar will be launching a new service from Edinburgh to Doha from May 28th.  They will fly five times per week, and this will – apparently – be the first service from Edinburgh to any Middle Eastern destination.

It is also worth noting that Qatar will using a brand new Boeing 787 on the route, which means that it will feature their impressive new business class seating as pictured below:

Qatar 787 business class seat

Even better, it is running as a day flight.  It will leave Edinburgh at 14.45, arriving in Doha at 23.40.

Avios redemption seats are already bookable at ba.comA one-way from Edinburgh to Doha in business class costs 40,000 Avios plus £240 – £112 less tax than taking a BA flight with a change in Heathrow.

If flying to Qatar, it is worth noting that ex-Heathrow redemptions are also a lot cheaper on Qatar.  The tax on a direct BA flight to Doha is £506 return, whilst a Qatar flight is £365 return.  Unless you are using a 2-4-1 voucher from your BA Amex, Qatar seems a no-brainer if you can get a 787 departure.  As the comments below show, even the older 777 planes are seen as a having a better business class service than BA.

  1. I thought this would be good news too but a bit of a mixed blessing depending where in the East you are headed. BKK for example will frequently require an 8h+ layover in Doha as I am not seeing any award availability on the DOH to BKK 1am flight. KUL is on an a330 whstrver the J products are on that. HAN is via BKK which I cannot seem to find on BA site, and HKT is via KUL. I have been searching EDI to DOH flight awards on Qatar for many weeks slready without success: when did you find them please Raffles? Also worth noting Qatar also plans to introduce AMS next year so that gives option to limit both tax and fees for those who can be bothered with extra hassle.

  2. Not sure what I date I used to get that tax data, I just plugged in a random date after May 28th!

    • Will give it another try. Problem may be that i was looking close to a year in advance. Hopefully by then I will feel more comfortable to fly a 787 too.

  3. What is also a no-brainer is that QR are non-stop. BA are via BAH.

The EDI flights also fit in great with connecting flight from/to PER, perfect for me

  5. I think Egypt and thus Sharm El Sheikh is considered part of the middle east.

  6. Timing of their EDI launch is quite interesting. They would have seen sufficient market for Emirates to go twice daily from GLA and no doubt are attempting to gain market share by poaching pax at a time Emirates are halving their GLA capacity as a result of DXB works.

  7. Blackberryaddict says:

You mention the 787, but their 777 product out of Heathrow is perfectly fine, although admittedly not as nice as the 787. It is better than BA though.

  8. andy stock says:

Business class on the 777 is a fine product which I rate above BA CW.

  9. sorry I have a real simple question . have about 100000 avios in baec account . How do I redeem on Qatar ? Sorry about simple question

    • Simply search as usual on ba.com – if Qatar seats are available, the seats will show up. Search London to Doha on, say, 10th January in Business one-way and you’ll see both the direct Qatar service and a range of connections (first leg on BA) via Frankfurt, Dubai, Venice and Manchester!
