Lufthansa launches its latest mileage sale routes for December

It’s time for our monthly round-up of discounted redemption routes available via the Lufthansa Miles & More programme.

The December list of discounted Miles & More redemptions from the UK is here.  You must book by December 31st for travel by, in most cases, 16th January.

As I say each month, given how high the taxes are, the European redemptions are still not great value.   You also need to select direct flights to get the discounted price – London to Munich to Cologne does not give you the discounted London – Cologne price, for example.

The long-haul Economy destinations are not the greatest deals either.  Business class redemptions, on the other hand, do offer genuine value.

The following long-haul routes are reduced for December, often sharply, in Business Class:

  • Abu Dhabi
  • Algiers
  • Bahrain
  • Bangalore
  • Beijing
  • Busan
  • Dallas
  • Dammam
  • Delhi
  • Doha
  • Dubai
  • Jeddah
  • Kuwait
  • Mumbai
  • Muskat
  • Osaka
  • Philadelphia
  • Seoul
  • Toronto
  • Vancouver

Whilst Lufthansa’s business class is not the greatest (unless you get a 747-800 with the new fully flat seat), you will also get the discounted prices on Austrian and Swiss where they fly the same route.  Austrian is rolling out its fully flat business class seat and I think Swiss is now 100% fully flat.

What we are really waiting for Raffles is the Big One – the Tesco Clubcard Points Avios Conversion Bonus!!!! There hasn’t been one since August 2012 by my records. Any inside news you care to share?

      Nothing I know!

I’ve started to move a % of clubcard points over from Tesco to Avios.

I had been holding out for a bonus conversion but have begun to consider the possibility that the current 2.4x rate could drop at anytime – hedging my bets I guess.

The monthly LH offers seem to be point to point routes only especially within Europe. However I have found normal awards that require a transfer point in Europe, and are not just point to point, to be a useful way of using up smaller amounts of excess LH miles. Yes, taxes are higher on LH, same for special offers and for regular bookings. However using miles on a booking requiring a stopover (allowed) or transfer – both of which are allowed – can cost a lot less money than the same revenue booking on some of these routes and the miles required are relatively low.

If you can get a cheaper award or other flight to reach Germany in order to start a longhaul special offer award flight from Germany you will find many more and better choices are offered of specials going out of Germany, than out of other countries. The taxes problem on the longhaul LH award may well remain though but it’s useful to have the choice of going out of Germany during UK peak periods.

Noting also that specials to Berlin from a lot of places are often very low miles on these specials.
