Get double Clubcard points (=double Avios) at Esso until 22nd December

Esso has quietly pushed out a ‘double points’ promotion for those petrol stations which accept Tesco Clubcard for fuel purchases.

As a reminder, the standard earnings rate at Esso petrol stations is:

For Esso stations with a Tesco Express attached – 1 Clubcard point (2.4 Avios) per £3 spent

For other participating Esso stations – 1 Clubcard point per 2 litres of fuel purchased

Until 22nd December, these rates are doubled.

For Esso stations with a Tesco Express attached – 2 Clubcard points (4.8 Avios) per £3 spent

For other participating Esso stations – 2 Clubcard points per 2 litres of fuel purchased

This is currently the most attractive offer available for earning Avios from petrol, unless you have the Tesco credit card.

If you don’t have a Tesco credit card, a Tesco petrol station gives you 1 point for every £2 spent.  This is worse than the Esso ‘double points’ offer.

If you DO have a Tesco credit card, you are still better off using a Tesco filling station and using your Tesco credit card as a Clubcard (do not pay with it) – that earns you 1 Clubcard point per £1 spent.

As usual, the best way to pay for petrol is with an Amex Gold.  That card gives double points on petrol purchases – you receive 2 Membership Rewards points per £1, which converts to 2 Avios.  (It also gives you 20,000 Avios for signing up, don’t forget!)

We have a Tesco and Esso station a block from each other which are driven past almost daily, so you can guess which I always use, specially as they are normally price-matched and the cheapest fuel around.

Murphy’s law : this offer appears the same week that I get my Tesco credit card!

  • erico1875 says:

The company I work for have recently changed fuel cards so Tesco and Esso are no longer options.
I was earning on aprox £190 of diesel per week. So this new offer is a double kick in the nuts 🙁

Btw got an email recently for anyone collecting Shell points:

    DOUBLE POINTS OFFER

We know that many of you will be filling up your cars and taking to the road over the holiday season to visit friends and family. So, to boost your points balance, we’d like to offer you double Shell Drivers’ Club points on all fuel purchases between Monday 23rd December and Wednesday 1st January.

So, why not fill up before you set up and enjoy picking up twice the amount of points.

From what I can tell, Shell points are effective worth 1/2 Avios point *if* my maths is correct..!

  • James says:

I am confused. I thought if you didnt pay with the card you only got normal points?

So does, this scheme apply with shopping to? I.e. could I use my Tesco Credit Card as a “clubcard” only when paying for my shopping and still get 2 points per pound spent?

    Thanks

    • Rob says:

No, it only works with petrol for some reason!

Use you Tesco credit card as a Clubcard instore and you only get the usual points, nothing extra.

  • TT2000 says:

Does using the Credit Card as a Clubcard in a regular Esso garage (no Tesco Extra attached) give any advantages?
