Maximise your Avios, air miles and hotel points

New Avios redemption opportunity – Thomas Cook Sport

Links on Head for Points may support the site by paying a commission.  See here for all partner links.

A new partner has popped up on the avios.com website – Thomas Cook Sport.

Thomas Cook Sport is described as Europe’s leading sport travel company.  They are, for instance, the official travel partner for nine Premier League football clubs, and can also supply travel packages for most major sporting events.

What they do NOT offer, in the main, is just tickets.  However, you are not necessarily losing out here since these are mainly fixtures and events where it would be difficult to buy a standalone ticket.  Tickets to UK Premier League matches, for example, seem to come bundled with a local hotel.

You can see the sort of events they cover by looking at their official website here.

A Head for Points reader who enquired about packages with Avios was told that you get 0.5p of value per Avios redeemed.  This means, as with a lot of the avios.com non-flight offers, that it offers far lower value for money than a flight redemption.  However, as with all these offers, if you are Avios-rich with more than you can use at present, this is as good a way as any of using them.

(Here is my recent article, in case you missed it, on another new offer – redeeming Avios for wine and champagne.)

You need to redeem via avios.com to order from Thomas Cook Sport.  If your Avios currently sit in British Airways Executive Club, you can move them across instantly and for free via ‘Combine My Avios’ under ‘My Account’ when logged in.

If anyone is interested as a pricing example the champions league game between man city and barcelona was 94,000 avios for 2 people, with seating in east stand level 3 (face value cost £60 each) and a twin night stay with breakfast at the park jnn raddison Manchester city centre. (Face value £150)

There were cheaper options starting at 80000 avios but I didn’t want to stay at the airport which would have meant a trek back after the game.

I then sold my other ticket / hotel space to my friend for £135….

It was a useful deal for me as the game is unlikely to go on general sale and I had a huge stash of avios which I won’t be using for flights.

I also booked a pair of tickets for the premier league darts in Sheffield for the wife and her friend plus a stay in Sheffield for 32000 avios.

You can’t really compare with the face value of the tickets since, as you say, they won’t be on general sale. Wimbledon Mens Final tickets go for £5,000 per pair but still have a £90 face value on them!
