Get 1,200 bonus Membership Rewards points for £400 spend at Amex Travel

American Express Travel has launched a decent bonus promotion for anyone spending £400 or more at their website.

To qualify for the 1,200 point bonus, you need to spend £400 or more on pre-paid hotels, plane tickets, car hire or experiences in one transaction before 13th February.

This bonus is in addition to the standard bonus of 1 extra Membership Rewards point per £1 spent, on top of your base earnings.

An Amex Platinum cardholder spending £400 would therefore receive 400 base points + 400 standard bonus points + 1,200 additional bonus points, totalling 2,000 points.

An Amex Gold would do even better, since they would earn 800 base points for a travel transaction, for a total of 2,400 on a £400 spend.

These are the rules on eligible cards:

The 1,200 Membership Rewards Points offer is applicable to eligible Green, Gold, Platinum, Centurion, Green Business Card, Gold Business Card, Platinum Business Card and Corporate Cardmembers who are registered to the American Express Membership Rewards® programme, and are active and current in their payments

Do double-check any pricing before you book, though.

A rather difficult offer potentially… flights? well thats a BA redemption..hotels? No status potentially and I would genuinely struggle to spend £400 on car hire… I guess it should be easier but….

  • gnarlyoldgoatdude says:

Amex travel often undercut the airline and the big boys expedia/opodo etc for Air Malta business class fares.

I’m glad that I’ve helped 0.036% of the readership.

I’m sure Tom from the MaltaPoints blog will find that interesting. You may find that tip goes wider than you expected!

      • MaltapointsTom says:

Indeed – thanks Charles. Timely comment too – I’ve actually got a post scheduled for 6 Jan on how Air Malta flights are usually cheaper if you don’t book with Air Malta. I used lastminute.com as my reference, but will have a look at Amex travel too now…

  • Alan says:

I don’t know about cruises, but I suspect FHR are excluded as they’re fully refundable and the card is charged only at checkout? (apart from a deposit at time of booking)

  • Simon says:

I was hoping there would be another 2,500 or 5,000 points bonus for making a booking at AMEX travel like there was in January last year but it doesn’t look like there will be now. I guess they saw the spike in bookings of youth hostels that month and changed the promotion for this year!

  • Simon says:

Talking of bonus MR points I just got my 1,000 points from the IOS Venmo app promo.

Had to contact AMEX to get them added, I wonder how much effort if any goes into the IT aspect of some of these promos, I get the feeling its cheaper for them just add the points manually for those who remember to chase up the missing points.

  • GlennM says:

    Hi all,
Has anyone made any purchases yet? Do you know if the points went on straight away?
Also, although it says ‘in one transaction’ has anyone put on multiple separate transactions of over £400 and know if that would work?

    • startupflyer says:

The rules seemed pretty explicit about the £400 in a single transaction, I had two seperate bookings to do but gave up due to having no obvious way to combine them.
