East Coast Trains is launching what it calls a ‘massive’ 7-day sale today.

Tickets will start from £5 each way in Standard and £20 each way in First Class.

You need to book by January 9th, for travel between 17th January and 28th March.  The period of 14th-23rd February is excluded, as are any trips to stations north of Edinburgh.

In theory, the booking page you need will be at www.eastcoast.co.uk/january although at the time of writing it isn’t running.

These tickets also qualify for East Coast Rewards points.  This is a pretty decent scheme, in my view, with just 50 points required to receive a pass for the First Class Lounge at Kings Cross. You will generate that from a £50 spend on standard class tickets or £37 spend on First Class, with any operator.

From the e-mail I received yesterday it may be worth pointing out that to get the sale price you have to go through the ‘special’ e-mail to be sent today, well according to this:

You’ll earn Rewards Points as usual when you book, but can only bag sale tickets using your registered email address via the special sale email you’ll receive tomorrow.

  • Chris says:

Yeah, definitely via a link being sent today by the looks of things.

An interesting addition to the Ts&Cs that has not been in any of the previous sales that I recall is that there is no availability north of Edinburgh which is a bit strange considering loads are fairly low at times between Aberdeen & Edinburgh at times, especially in First Class.

I booked earlier. The homepage changed by itself to show the special banner and search bar which gave access to the special fares. I had had no email at thus point. Lots of availability for the dates I checked.

The site is currently down! Raffles, I think you now need to give sites warnings before you run them on here 😉
    Happy New Year BTW!

Thanks for the tip-off Raffles – got a £10 return to visit my friends in York for the weekend in February. VERY slow booking process but at least (unlike most booking engines) National Rail booking engine keeps your reservation for 2 hours to give you time to pay for it (and refresh your page about 100 times!).

Website back up and running. Managed to book a few 1st class tickets from Edinburgh to London which I’m combining with using up some Virgin Flying Club points to use Little Red (hopefully it will be an empty plane again) to get back up.

First is a bit old but i get my monies worth by always taking the little miniatures from the drink service, depending on the staff they won’t open the bottle, or will leave the top on. On Virgin First they keep the screw caps (good weekday food service though).

    • Mr Chiggles says:

On the food point though, I’ve tweeted them to ask why coming out of London you get a full 3 course “evening” menu but from everywhere else (inc Edinburgh) you just get the “all day” menu which is nice enough but not as substantial!

got two £10 return from Doncaster to London today – bargain

I’ve found their CC processing to be flakey in general. I’ve had this error too but found the exact same 3V cards work next day. Also found the real CCs also fail when their systems are throwing a wobbly, so don’t think it’s to do with 3V blocking these cards.
