Maximise your Avios, air miles and hotel points

Earn double Avios with Avis rentals until the end of March

Avis, the official British Airways car rental partner, has launched a ‘double Avios’ promotion.

With every Avis rental between now and 16th March, you will receive at least 1,000 Avios instead of the usual 500 for every rental.  You must rent for a minimum of three days in a Group C car or higher.

The actual earning rate is – with this promotion – 6 Avios per £1 spent, so if you spend over £166 then you will receive more than 1,000 points.

Avis also offers a free second driver on all British Airways Executive Club rates.  You often find a ludicrous premium charged if two people share the driving (surely this is safer than one person doing it all on a long trip?!) so this can be a valuable benefit.

You also receive a bonus of 750 Avios for completing four rentals in a calendar year.

Full details can be found at the Avis / BA portal here.

As an alternative, don’t forget the Club Carlson / Avis offer which runs until June.  This offers 9,000 Club Carlson points, enough for a free night at their cheapest hotels.

Has anyone else ever had problems with these points coming through? I did around 8 Avis rentals last year and I think only received points for 2 of them.

    • Rob says:

Is there an online reclaim form on the Avis website? Hertz has one which is very good, missing miles usually post within a few days of submitting it.

      • littlefish says:

The avis online form doesn’t seem to result in any action.
Avis seem to go thru phases of points posting, then a few months of weird numbers posting or nothing at all.
I average about 2 of 3 rentals posting.
Preferred is useful in USA, never saw the 500 pts though 🙂

  • sarah says:

There’s an extra 500 Avios if you join Avis Preferred and rent a car. Anyone found any downsides to Avis Preferred? Seems like a no-brainer but almost too easy…

    • Olivula says:

I do 12 rentals a year in Nice. They doubled their prices this year. I preferred Avis but not THAT much….so they lost this customer.

  • Ray says:

Is there any benefit to paying for the rental with a BA Amex (free one) V Amex Gold(still in first year) ???

    • Rob says:

Do you still get 250 bonus Avios from Avis for paying on a BA Amex? You did at one point.

      • Ray says:

I think so,but should I receive double MR as travel bonus on a first year Gold card.
ie, if the hire costs more than £125 then the gold route will be worth more in MR than the 250 bonus on the BA card ?

        • Rob says:

No, because you get your basic BA Amex miles as well. I’d therefore say £250 is the breakeven point – that would get you 500 Avios on the free BA card (250 for paying, 250 bonus) vs 500 MR points on Gold.

If you have a BAPP the breakeven is higher, say £450 (675 for paying plus 250 bonus on BAPP, total 925) vs 900 MR on Gold.

  • Tom says:

nightmare trying to get avis points to post, I would not bother
