British Airways adds First Class to its upcoming Boeing 787 orders

When the first batch of Boeing 787-8’s entered service with British Airways late last year, they were designed as three-class aircraft.  There is no First Class cabin at all.

There was some discussion at the time about whether this was the beginning of the end of First Class on BA.  However, the airline has now announced that deliveries of the (slightly larger) 787-9 aircraft – due from 2015 – will have a First Class cabin.

To quote from Business Traveller:

Frank van der Post, BA’s managing director of brands and customer experience, said: “Suffice to say immense attention has been paid to developing our award-winning First cabin, ensuring our signature style is maintained.

“We’ve also concentrated on the materials and technology used, the space around the seat and the comfort of the bed.”

He added: “We introduced an updated First cabin on the A380 when we launched that in September, which offers customers 30 per cent more personal space and 60 per cent more personal stowage and we’re getting great feedback.

“The new cabin on the 787-900 is a further development, which we think our customers will love. It will feel exceptionally elegant and beautifully British — exactly what our customers ask of us.”

It will be a very small first class cabin, with just eight seats compared to the current average of 14.

Shouldn’t that be look rather than feel elegant?

  • Alex says:

It’s not the 787-900, it’s the 787-9. How hard is it for corporate PR to do some basic proof reading?

  • AviosNewbie says:

Hi Raffles, would you know anything about the roll out schedule of the New First on the existing fleet? I have just redeemed the 2-4-1 voucher for LHR-MEX return for Christmas, and am wondering if I’ll get the NF. And if not, does BA still award 50k avios per person per sector in compensation?

    • Rob says:

That post on the 50k compensation lists what plane types have been converted. Look up your aircraft for the flight (do a dummy cash booking on ba.com, click on the flight number and the aircraft model will pop up) and see what it shows and how it compares. There is a thread on the BA board at Flyertalk which also covers this information.

    • Mark says:

Mexico is sometimes serviced by 747s with Old First so it’s possible. However by Christmas there will be no more than one or two left, with most due to be retired this year or in a small number of cases refitted with NF from others that have been.

So in short it’s very likely though not 100% certain you’ll get NF.

  • Richie says:

Do we know , or have any indication on which routes these will operate? I’m guessing the -9 variant has a similar or slightly longer range?

    • Rob says:

Slightly longer range (and a bigger plane). If they have First it will be driven more by revenue, though – unlikely to go to routes like Calgary which don’t get a First cabin at the moment for example.

  • Idrive says:

Hi! Just a stupid question..i was playing with BA last night… How can i book FC in cash or with Avios? I was dummy booking Nyc or Bos… Are only some routes available?

    • Rob says:

No, all routes available, but North America is difficult due to American Airlines members nicking all the seats!
