Maximise your Avios, air miles and hotel points

Earn Nectar points with train tickets booked via Great Western, First TPE, First CC and ScotRail

Links on Head for Points may support the site by paying a commission.  See here for all partner links.

We don’t cover Nectar points on Head for Points much (although remember you can make a cheeky £100 (20,000 points) by applying for and cancelling the Amex Nectar credit card).  However, when they link to travel, I have an excuse.

First Great Western, First TransPennine Express, First Capital Connect and ScotRail have begun offering Nectar points when you book train tickets with them.

The standard rate is 2 points per £1, equivalent to 1% cashback.  However, from April 14th to April 27th, all of the three sites will be offering double points (4 per £1, equivalent to 2%).

I have just been updating my guide to buying train tickets, which will run on Head for Points next week.  This is not a bad deal, especially if you book via the TransPennine Express site.  You get 1% cashback via TopCashback – whatever train company you book for – plus 2% back in Nectar points during the promotion fortnight.  There are no credit card charges and no booking fees, although there is a £1 postage fee.  This can be avoided by collecting your tickets from a machine at a station.

Get 50p of free points

ScotRail, as per this website, is offering 100 Nectar points to everyone who links their Scotrail account to their Nectar account.  To get your 100 points, fill in the form here – it will take under a minute if you have your Nectar card to hand!

(EDIT: as per the comments, First Capital Connect is also offering 100 points for linking your account. I would imagine it has a separate database to ScotRail so you could double up.)

First Capital Connect is also participating and also offering the 100 points for linking accounts. I wonder if my annual season ticket will be eligible for nectar points – finally some kind of ‘discount/rebate’ (other than credit card Avios earn) on a hefty spend?

  • Jay says:

I know about a 10% off for advance tickets. I could not find it for others ticket types. Can you explain a bit more about the 10% for booking directly with FGW ?

    • Rob says:

It is only advance tickets (if indeed FGW still do it). East Coast and Cross Country have the same deal.

      • Jay says:

Usually advance tickets are specific to train companies and usually I booked it directly from their site.

Recently, I spotted a 10% off for any train tickets bought from East Midlands site on an old really dodgy famous cash back ( rebate) site. I had to do a paid sign up for it to get 10% off for a long haul Emirates flight. It is good if you travel long-haul flights and purchase from argos alot.

        • Callum says:

Advance tickets are always specific to a certain company, but they are always available from any site. Sometimes you’ll get a discount on the operators site like those mentioned above but they all sell them for the same basic price.

      • Brian says:

Yes, they still do it – bought one tonight. And it is indeed only advance tickets for their own trains.

  • Rob says:

Note these are only for transactions with that train company, although TPE offers 1% on other TOC sales. Throw in Nectar points and a lack of fees and TPE is not a bad option.

  • Tabitha says:

A heap of miles potentially if you can buy your annual ticket through this method?

I’ve signed up an linked all 5 First franchises – hopefully for 100 points each. Don’t forget Hull Trains!
The quote for season tickets, for Hull Trains at least: “And, if you’re a season ticket holder you’ll get a whopping 2,500 points for an annual ticket, or 200 points for a monthly ticket.”

    • signol says:

And for a limited time, double points:
4 points per £1 spent on train tickets purchased at hulltrains.com (excluding season tickets, Gift Vouchers, Travelcards and PLUSBUS); 100 points for the online purchase or renewal of a weekly season ticket (where available) 400 points for the online purchase or renewal of a monthly season ticket (For tickets valid for more than 1 month, but less than a year, you will collect points for every full month (up to a maximum of 2500). i.e. a 2 month, 3 week season would be worth 400 points); and 5000 points for the online purchase or renewal of an annual season ticket. – See more at: http://www.hulltrains.co.uk/offers/nectar-loyalty/#sthash.ywoo5mzA.dpuf

RedSpottedHanky have a Price Promise which can offset that. It’s a bit of a faff, but after booking with them you send in a screenshot of another company’s site showing a cheaper price (eg FGW for one of their own AP fares), along with a bunch of other info, and RSH will then give you loyalty points to the value of the difference. They won’t beat it, but they will match it, via the loyalty points. Takes a few days to come through.

  • ups says:

It appears that they are all now offering 200 points each for linking your Nectar card. I had signed up for two of them and received 100 points each. Signed up now to the rest, so should receive 200 points each for those now.

    • Jay says:

Too bad for me. Signed up for all and received 500. 🙁

      • ups says:

Well – good while it lasted. Via MSE:
Nectar has informed us there has been a change in the T&Cs and now you will only get 200 bonus points on your first First Group registration. If you register for all five websites now, you’ll only get 200 points, not 1,000.

My points have posted for the first 2 registrations (100 each), but still waiting for the remaining 3 (200 each) to post – let’s see if they honour that!
