BAwayday – super-cheap weekend day trips – extended to more cities

I wrote a couple of months ago about the launch of a new – and potentially very interesting – leisure product.

Called BAwayday (hmmm ….), these are cheap, last minute, same-day-return tickets offered at a fixed price.

Available ONLY for Saturdays and Sundays, the prices are fixed.  And, it must be said, fixed at a very low level for a ticket that is available at short notice.

British Airways A320

You must fly back the same day, either Saturday or Sunday.  Realistically, you will need to live close to Heathrow to take full advantage, or be willing to stay over the night before or after in a local hotel.

The key thing is that they book into G class.  In plain English, this means that they will be available even at very short notice, except at peak periods.

These flights were initially only available from six cities.  The list has now expanded substantially.  Here is the current list with prices (return, economy, per person):

  • Aberdeen £100
  • Amsterdam £100
  • Barcelona £90
  • Brussels £90
  • Copenhagen £90
  • Dublin £80
  • Edinburgh £90
  • Geneva £80
  • Hamburg £90
  • Linate (Milan) £90
  • Lisbon £80
  • Madrid £90
  • Manchester £100
  • Marseille £90
  • Munich £100
  • Newcastle £90
  • Nice £90
  • Paris £100
  • Rome £90
  • Stockholm £90
  • Vienna £100

I doubt British Airways will do a lot of publicity for these deals, because there are only a limited number of flights each day that can realistically be used.  The pricing is a little wacky (not sure why Manchester is more than Lisbon, except possibly the longer flight time means it is less attractive) but you can’t complain at £100 or less.

POUG may appear for these either in MMB or at OLCI.

I took one to MUC in the initial period and with a bit of planning you can have a great day out – a decent bierkeller lunch plus a couple of museums before a night cap in the lounge on the way home. Good fun

As for getting to LHR, a mini cab from North London won”t be much more than £35 so can’t see what the fuss is.

  • Fido says:

I’m with James on this – seems utterly pointless and you’d be spending half your time looking at your watch to make sure you didn’t miss your flight home.

  • London Traveller says:

I think it’s a great initiative for those who want to do things at short notice (and life would be very dull without a bit of spontaneity) or revisit a city to see an exhibition/visit a museum/gallery etc.

  • Nick says:

Would be nice if they allowed one night at destination. This is not great. Obviously may work for some

  • Flieduk says:

Would BA lose money if they allowed an onvernight stay?

I get that they are trying to yield manage but it does not seem to take away from the business market by allowing the overnight stay? Might get more demand. It just seems a waste to get for a day

    • Rob says:

Because they want to fill the last flight on Sat and the first flight on Sunday

  • Alan says:

They’re not bad prices, but I think RFS redemptions are much better value, especially given they throw in the connecting flight to LHR and there’s no same day return requirement!

  • Ralph says:

On the same page as the Bawayday is a link to weekends away for the next three weekends. Picked up a Saturday morning flight, beck Monday late afternoon and two nights 4* hotel in the heart of Venice for £450, which seems a far better deal than out and back in a day with all the associated costs

    • Fenny says:

The weekend deals are priced for 2 people, which means they’ve halved the cost of the hotel room. Pretty crap for us young free & single types.

    • Polly says:

Maybe that’s their secret plan, using the away day as a look see, then you book a weekend with them! Job done, no sales effort at all from BA.
