Maximise your Avios, air miles and hotel points

‘The Avios Big Reward’ is unveiled – and it’s rubbish

Links on Head for Points may support the site by paying a commission.  See here for all partner links.

On Saturday, I ran an article asking if anyone knew what the ‘bigreward.avios.com’ website was meant to be about.  All the site had was a holding message saying that something ‘exciting’ was coming on Wednesday 28th.

Well, Wednesday 28th arrived yesterday.

The result (see here) is exceptionally underwhelming.

Big Reward 2

You need to understand that Avios is ‘bigging up’ this competition at great expense.  As I got off the tube yesterday, all of the video ads on the walls of the escalator were promoting it.  And yet, the top prize isn’t worth much more than the £800 of free Melia hotel stay that I gave away on Head for Points a couple of weeks ago!

What is it all about?

This is how the “The Avios Big Reward” works:

You go to theaviosbigreward.com

You nominate someone who you think deserves a holiday, by means of either a 60 second video or a 250-word story

The person you nominate cannot be a pet or other non-human (this in the rules!)

Your video, if you go that route, will be published on the website although the winners will be chosen by independent judges rather than the public

You must upload your entry by June 18th

The winner is the person you nominate and NOT you, the person who nominates them.  The rules specifically state that the nominee can take whoever they want and is not obliged to take you.

All of this obviously requires a bit of effort on behalf of the entrant, so the prize must be pretty good, yes?  Er, no.

Here are prizes:

2 x a pair of World Traveller (yes, economy) tickets to New York

5 x a pair of Eurotraveller (yes, economy) tickets to a ‘9,000 or 15,000 Avios’ destination

43 x a pair of Eurotraveller (yes, economy) tickets to a ‘9,000 Avios’ destination

You are not even given the Avios to spend as you wish, although the trade-off is that BA will pay your taxes for you.  You need to submit a destination and three pairs of dates that you want to fly and then you will be told which of the three you are getting.

As part of entering, you also agree to your video or story being published online – which seems a lot of privacy to lose (especially if the person you nominate is ill) in return for two flights to a 9,000 Avios destination.

In fact, by entering you are giving Avios the right – for two years – to use your entry in any way it wants, in any media it wants, without asking your permission, crediting it with your name or paying you a penny.  Fantastic.

Obviously there is nothing wrong with the idea of this competition and some of you may want to enter.  I just always get a bad feeling when a company spends far more advertising a competition than it is willing to put up as prizes ….

Maybe they are competing with Heathrow Rewards for Rubbish Competition of the Week.

Top three prizes: free parking at Heathrow. Talk about not understanding your customers!

  • Kathy says:

So, you’re going to nominate someone else – presumably someone who can’t afford a holiday – to win the flights, and as the result of winning they’ll then have to fork out for a hotel, unless they have friends or relatives who can offer them a room. But, you’re not sure what destination they’ll be going to, if they have to nominate 3, so that doesn’t really work either.

It’s a bit of a weird prize – in New York, even a low-star hotel room for a few nights will cost nearly as much as a cheap economy flight.

  • Worzel says:

T&Cs seem to have been modified since 24th May-the early internet link to the promotion was cut that day. Point 13 of the T&C’s was enough to put me off at the time and Simon (8:53 am) mentions point 14 on top of this:

13 – By submitting a video or written entry, you grant the Promoter and its associated companies a worldwide, royalty-free, non-exclusive licence for a term of 2 years to use those entries (including comments you submit in connection with your entry) in any and all media (including without limitation on its social media channels, websites and tangible media) without accreditation or notification. If a Nominator or Nominee requests the Promoter remove their entry after the end of the term of this licence, the Promoter’s duty to do so will be limited to those channels still reasonably under its control. The Promoter bears no liability for use of any entries in accordance with these terms.
14 – Winner notification: Nominators and Nominees may be contacted and asked to attend a TV event that is running in connection with this competition and will take place on 11 July 2014. The Nominee will be informed they have been short listed by 28 June 2014 and will be notified if they are a winner by 14 July 2014 at either the event or by telephone or email. In the event that the Nominee is not contactable we will contact the Nominator. If the Nominee and the Nominator are not contactable by 21 July 2014 we reserve the right to choose another winner and the entitlement to the prize will be lost. This competition is run by Avios and is not administered by Channel4 Television.
15 – After winner notification, the winning entries will be published online. Nominees will be able to request the video be removed by emailing social.media@avios.com.

Rob mentions the amount of expense on advertising; Squills (7:14 am) mentions the further two icons on the main advertisement banner.

The January Avios “Unmissable Sale” turned out to be pretty good in the end, and perhaps, again, Avios have something “up their sleeve” ??

  • Lady London says:

Let’s hope this is not the first of many promotions by some new bright spark at Avios Towers.

  • Jonny says:

If they’re bigging up rather underwhelming promotions like this, there’s almost no chance they’ll bother offering a tesco conversion bonus! Though its quite possible your “average” Avios collector actually prefer the former…!

  • Andrew s says:

It does rather beg the question – who is the target auidence for Avios? It would seem from this promotion that it is not the “medium to high net worth individuals” who frequent this forum..

Does the profit from an airline loyalty scheme actually belong in those individuals who do not/cannot afford to fly regulary?

    • TimS says:

The profit from an airline loyalty scheme comes from the points/miles earned but never redeemed.

    • Rob says:

BA / Avios are keen to promote the scheme beyond frequent flyers. Why? Because when a non-flyer earns a mile via Tesco, Shell etc BA gets paid!

  • Andy Stock says:

Poor. Not worth the time entering!

  • callum says:

Its pretty obvious this contest is aimed at the casual avios collector – I.e. almost no-one on here but the majority of avios account holders.

While economy tickets may be nothing to you, I can rattle of a list of dozens of people I know personally who would be thrilled to win a prize like that.

    • Rob says:

Let’s hope they can afford the hotel, transfers and spending money then!

It still doesn’t excuse BA being cheap about putting the winner in Economy given that, by that time, they will have given up the rights to their entry and been exploited by BA across TV and other social media. New York hotels are not cheap either last time I looked …

Perhaps Head for Points should donate a couple of rooms to the winner as PR gesture?!

      • Will says:

I’m fine with them using Economy as they’re aren’t enough CW flights to go around anyway! Although I guess they could have at least stretched to WT+

        • Rob says:

BA is selling Club World to New York for under £1000 ex-Rome and a few other places at the moment! No shortage of seats ….
