Tonight I am staying in Amsterdam and I don’t know where, c/o Hotel Tonight

Back in February I wrote about Hotel Tonight.  This is a new iOS and Android app which lets you book hotels for the same day only in various European cities.

At present, it covers London, Birmingham, Brighton, Edinburgh, Glasgow, Liverpool and Manchester in the UK. France and Germany are also well covered, along with most other European capitals.

Hotel Tonight

You can earn £15 of free credit simply for signing up.  Unfortunately this is not as good as the £30 offer that was available earlier in the year.

Download Hotel Tonight and use promotional code RBURGESS15 on the sign-up screen.  This is my refer-a-friend link, although I won’t earn any credit unless you make a booking.

You now have a balance of £15. Frankly, in London, that won’t get you too far, although on Friday they were offering the low-budget Tune at Westminster for £85.  However, in another UK city (Birmingham, Liverpool, Glasgow, Edinburgh, Manchester, Brighton) or in Europe it will go further – and all the hotels they offer are reduced in the first place.

Tonight, Matthew, I will be in Amsterdam ….

After I wrote the initial article in February, a few Head for Points readers signed up and made bookings (thank you!).  This meant that I received some Hotel Tonight credit which I need to use up.

I am therefore heading out to Amsterdam today to see how Hotel Tonight works in practice.  I won’t be able to book myself into a hotel until 8am UK time and I will be at the mercy of whatever selection of properties Hotel Tonight decides to offer today.

To be honest, I am expecting a bit of trouble.  As of Friday when I am writing this, Expedia shows that Amsterdam is very very full on Monday night – the InterContinental is £593 and the Waldorf-Astoria is showing as £511.  This does not bode well.

I will let you know later in the week how I got on, and how I found the hotel (or indeed, whether I found a hotel).

Haha Rob, if you don’t have an IHG redemption or some other back-up plan in place I would be astonished! Using hoteltonight in conjunction with flexible rates or redemptions might be a good stategy though so I may give it a try.

I signed up for over a dozen accounts using the 2 codes, including the story one. £55 an account. They were due to expire on 4 May, but they screwed up and had to let every one keep their credit. I’ve had some lovely stays. Amsterdam always seems really dear though, so good luck.

Hotel Tonight offers a VERY poor selection of hotels, this a not a great way to book late rooms, avoid at all costs.

Hi Raffles, I used HT a couple of weeks ago in Dublin and it worked a treat. I installed it after your post & the credit was handy as I was staying with a colleague so we needed 2 rooms. Sadly the rooms I had originally booked were for the wrong night (!) And so at 7pm on a busy Tuesday evening I tirned to the app & found that only a couple of hotels had space and the one which was nearest was £130 per night. I called them directly and they quoted €220 per room so the HT rate was very good – especially with the credit – and when we got there we found that the hotel was an incredible 5* one – The Merrion Hotel opposite some very grand Irish Government buildings near St Stephens Green. Sadly the rate didn’t include breakfast but the HT credit covered that. The app did struggle initiallt to book tge room but after calling their helpline I was advised to log out & back in again and it worked. I was also unclear how to book multiple rooms but it was as simple as going through the Book a Room procedure more than once! All in all we had a great stay and I was relieved I’d booked the wrong room on a flexible rate so we could cancel it & stay at The Merrion! So I could honestly (but not literally) say that HT saved my life tonight!

Does anyone know if HT booked stays earn loyalty points with any of the big chains (Hilton, Starwood, etc.)?

I have some credit in an account. Every time I’ve looked at the app for cities I’m likely to need to stay in at some point, the range has not been great, so I massively doubt I would use it for anything other than trying to get some free points in a tiny mattress run. Although I suspect I wouldn’t get points anyway as it’d be treated like an Expedia stay. Anyone with experience?

    • Rob says:

Gut feeling is that you would not get points, although as the hotels contract directly with Hotel Tonight you could get lucky I suppose.

I’ve received points twice now at the Radisson Blu LHR on HT bookings.

  • Raffles says:

Currently in the airport looking at my options and, frankly, it is not looking good. The problem is that tonight is very expensive in Amsterdam and prices are loopy or, when not, the hotels on offer have serious issues. (I will probably be having a quiet night in tonight so need a decent room, not a crashpad.) Time to look at Plan B …..

    • Michalis says:

      Hi Raffles,

Have you thought/looked at the top secret hotels at lastminute.com?
You can find some pretty decent properties there most of the time (and for most you can actually know the hotel prior to booking)
I know 2 weekends ago in Prague I could get the Boscolo hotel for £163 for 2 nights through lastminute topsecret hotels. The price on their website at the time i was looking, was £169 per night!!

      • Rob says:

I have activated Plan B and it has worked out very nicely. But you will need to wait until Thu to learn what happened!

  • Jeremy I says:

We had a very successful HT stay on the credit gained through HFP a couple of weeks ago in Seattle so it really is hit and miss. Properties do change throughout the day and it’s worth checking later on.
