A new oneworld lounge opened at Los Angeles International Airport this week.

Designed and run by Qantas on behalf of oneworld, it is a huge facility.  Phase 1 which has just opened is a 400-seat business class lounge.  This will soon be expanded to 600 seats.  An additional 200-seat First Class lounge will also open.

British Airways flyers will be able to access it under standard oneworld rules – BA Gold card holders and First Class ticket holders can use the First Class lounge whilst BA Silver card holders and Business Class ticket holders can use the other lounge.

The press releases states:

The stylish and spacious Business Lounge has a contemporary design reflecting Californian culture, combined with signature elements from each airline, built around a communal fireplace and central glass atrium providing natural light

In the lounge’s dining area, visitors can choose from menus, designed by renowned Qantas chef Neil Perry, based on signature Qantas Lounge favourites with influences of multicultural California, including Italian, Mexican, Chinese, Korean and US West Coast street food.

Californian food carts similar to the pop-up dining concept offer freshly prepared dishes such as crumbed cod tacos with red cabbage slaw and lime chipotle mayo and Asian-spiced chicken wings.

At the cocktail bar, customers can select signature cocktails or premium wines, or have the barista service create the coffee of their choice. The lounge also offers an enhanced hot and cold buffet, faster WiFi, new workstations and nine shower suites with Aurora Spa amenities, with seven more shower suites to be available soon.

Qantas, which has developed and will manage the new facilities on behalf of its fellow oneworld members, has partnered with Sofitel to offer a service experience consistent with the standards across its Sydney, Melbourne, Hong Kong and Singapore lounges.

This includes a hosted experience for customers travelling in First, Qantas Platinum Frequent Flyers and oneworld Emerald members with exclusive services including shirt pressing, shoe shining and priority access to showers.

Upon completion the Business Lounge will also include a Family Zone.

As is standard in the US, I understand that premium alcohol will NOT be free apart from house beer and house wine.

The lounge will be used by passengers flying on Qantas, BA, airberlin, Iberia, Japan Airlines and LAN.  It will not be accessible by American Airlines or US Airways passengers as they operate from other terminals.

  • Paul says:

Does Qantas/One World have an arrivals lounge at LAX?

  • Daftboy says:

The comment about premium alcohol not being free can’t be correct surely?

It is certainly standard in domestic-focussed US clubs etc, but wouldn’t a lounge operated by Qantas and with the BA name on the door apply its normal rules (particuarly as there is no domestic OW service from TBIT)?

I could of course be entirely incorrect, but it seems odd.

    • darrenf says:

Seems strange to me too – premium alcohol is definitely free in the NZ lounge at LAX and the BA lounge at SFO.

    • B says:

Don’t you need to tip the bartenders in US lounges, even if the alcohol is free? (Never been to a lounge in the US)

      • Gregor says:

I had a G&T (no charge) at the bar in the LAX Oneworld lounge. It didn’t occur to me to leave a tip as it’s not a “normal” service environment. That might have been an error on my part, but then again I didn’t see anyone else leaving a tip….

      • Simon says:

I used the lounge in Las Vegas with one of my passes from having an AMEX Gold card and all alcoholic drinks were free. I did tip a dollar a drink though, some people were tipping some weren’t.

  • Gregor says:

I was in the new lounge on Monday night (16th June, the day after it opened?), returning from SFO via LAX. I didn’t stay long as I also had an airside wander round the impressively refurbished Tom Bradley International Terminal – landside it’s pretty chaotic, but airside it’s a gleaming high-end mall with A380s lined up outside. The lounge was already packed, so the forthcoming extensions will be welcome. I had a G&T at the bar and wasn’t charged for it. I didn’t try any of the food but the buffet looked good, especially in comparison to next day in the T5 North lounge, where that same old dull food selection has been trotted out forever.

  • AC says:

If it’s the same standard as the Qantas Singapore lounge does that mean it includes a table serviced dining area even for the Biz lounge? That would set it well apart from any other US based lounges.

  • pazza2000 says:

Any idea when the First section is due to open? Flying out of TBIT in Aug. Is the old one world lounge complex still open?
