Shangri-La’s new Instant Dining Awards – get more value at The Shard

Links on Head for Points may support the site by paying a commission.  See here for all partner links.

A lot of Head for Points readers have been enjoying free or heavily reduced meals and drinks in the Shangri-La Hotel in The Shard in London in recent weeks.  They have been redeeming the 1,200 Shangri-La Golden Circle points that were offered during a promotion last year and which convert into £55 per 1,000 points.

I got an email from Shangri-La yesterday to announce that they have launched Instant Dining Awards. (EDIT: After a reader enquired, it seems that this cannot yet be done at The Shard – see the comments – although presumably it will roll out soon.)

Instant Dining Awards allow you to pay part or all of your Shangri-La restaurant or bar bill with your Golden Circle points.

There seem to be both good and bad reasons for doing this compared to the alternative, which is redeeming 1,000 points for a £55 / $100 voucher:

Instant Awards allow you to use up your ENTIRE Shangri-La points balance.  At present, anyone who has visited The Shard will have redeemed 1,000 points for a £55 voucher.  If you earned the full 1,200 points from the promotion last year, you will have been stuck with 200 orphan points.  With Instant Awards, you can redeem your entire 1,200 points balance so you will get £66 of value for the points.

The rules are a bit vague.  However, there is an implication that only ONE Golden Circle card can be applied to each bill.  If you redeem for vouchers, you are allowed to mix together vouchers from different accounts.

You will not earn Golden Circle points for the part of the cost of your meal paid for with Instant Awards. People do seem to be earning points on the whole bill sometimes if they pay with the paper vouchers. (EDIT: This comment was amended following a comment below.)

Instant Awards cannot be used to pay for the service charge element of your bill.  I don’t think this applies if you use a paper voucher.

With Instant Awards, you are reliant on the Shangri-La IT system working at the time you pay.  The rules state that, if the hotel cannot verify your card balance, it is tough luck and you will have to pay in cash.  You may prefer to order a paper voucher to give yourself 100% certainty of being able to use it.

You need your physical Golden Circle membership card to hand to use an Instant Award, as well as photo ID.

The good news is that paper redemption vouchers (£55 per 1000 points) will still be available.  If any of the small print issues I highlighted above are a problem – it is for me, as I was planning to use a voucher from my account and from my wifes account to settle the same bill – you can still order those via the Shangri-La website.

Good morning!that will be good for those of us who could not earn the full 1200. But…. Who got the plastic card? I have never received it!

    • Rob says:

Pretty sure I never got one either, although I normally bin ‘base level’ cards as they are never much use.

    • George says:

I applied for one once I got a reply that I needed a qualifying stay or 50 Award Points. Competition points might be void…

      Might try again!

    • Simon says:

There is an option on the Shangri-La website to request a replacement card which I just did and was shown a page which said I’d get the card in 4 weeks although looking at Rich’s comment which he added today, Instant Dining Awards can’t be used at the Shard at the moment.

  • Waribai says:

“You need your physical Golden Circle membership card to hand to use an Instant Award, as well as photo ID.”

And you won’t get a card until you’ve earned at least 50 points. Although you could print off a temporary one….

  • Andrew says:

If you get a paper voucher for 1000 points, you could use the 200 points you’re left with on instant rewards another time for a lunchtime sandwich at Ling (the ground floor Pain Quotidien style outlet).

  • Kat says:

Perfect timing. I was wondering whether it would be worth using the instant reward or paper voucher for our upcoming reservation. This post clears it all up! Thanks

  • TimS says:

If you have two accounts i wonder if you could use the paper vouchers from 2 cards to pay for the bulk of the bill and then redeem any remaining balance from one of the two cards for instant rewards for the remainder?

Most excellent! My pregnant wife deserve a treat.

I would like to go as high as possible e.g. to the Gong, but what is the menu like there!?

    • Frenske says:

Thanks for the link, some how I could not find it.

LOL. Almost everything on the plate is not recommended for pregnant women: raw ham, raw fish, shell fish, blue cheese and liver.

Now I might be wrong, as I haven’t actually been there yet, so others who have might be able to correct me. However GONG is mainly just a bar, so it provides Bar food, where as TING is the restaurant. I’ve also read elsewhere that GONG which is on level 52, might actually be ‘too high’. I think the point the person was trying to make was that, especially at night, there was a better view from TING at level 35 or something, as you could more easily pick out the landmarks.

I don’t live anywhere near London, so will be planning a trip soon. The plan is to have a drink in GONG first, somewhere just before sunset. Then head on down to TING and watch the view change from day to night. Two views in one! Well that’s the plan anyway.

      • trickster says:

Ting is a restaurant and a lounge.
Gong is a bar, but does have some food offerings.

      • Frenske says:

I thought there is a requirement that you spend £30 per head in the bar. Maybe you can transfer the bill but I think this is unlikely. So you might need to spend over £120 if you are with two.

        • Trevor says:

There is a £30 per head min spend in Gong, unless you go 24th, 25, 26, 31st Aug, then no min. You can transfer your bill from gong to Ting, but the min spend per head still applies.

          • whitenoise says:

Clearly the left hand does not know what the right hand is doing, as I was told that you couldn’t transfer your bill from Gong to Ting, unless you were a hotel guest.

When I mentioned about the minimum spend, the woman I spoke to asked how long I would be staying. I said we were having a cocktail before dinner (for 4 people) so she said the minimum spend would be halved to £15 per person.

          • Trevor says:

Thanks for the further feedback. I’m there next week but would prefer the reduced bar tab prior to the restaurant so I think another call and then winging it will be the way forward.

  • Trickster says:

This arrived in my inbox just hours after booking vouchers and a table in Ting Lounge for lunch next week, when we are in London fit a few days. Thought I had missed out on a better opportunity at first, but happy with the vouchers. Still kicking myself that I didn’t enrol and get the points for my wife too.

FYI, for anyone wanting to visit with children. They are welcome in Ting, but alas not Gong. I’ve had a kids menu emailed which look good, however Ting say they don’t have it, so I’m confused. If I clear this up, I’ll reply here in case it’s of use for someone.

    • trickster says:

They have confirmed to me that the kids menu is available in both the Ting Restaurant and Lounge. I feel I might be the only one who cares about this! 😉

  • Trevor says:

Due to the double points promo during August and limited availability, I called up to check if you can earn points when using vouchers, and after consultation with others by the lady on the phone, I was told you can’t. Has anyone actually been able to earn points via a redemption at the Shard?

    • Rob says:

Not sure about The Shard but some people have definitely posted on here that they have earned points. That may be from inexperienced waiters of course.
