A decent new American Express promotion has appeared in the online accounts of many people.   I have it showing under my Platinum card although it is not showing for my SPG or BA Amex.  My wife does have it showing for her BA Amex.

The deal offers £10 statement credit when you spend £30 at WH Smith.  It is valid for the first 30,000 people to register.

If you think that WH Smith doesn’t have much to offer, think again.  The larger (non-railway and non-airport) stores tend to sell a decent range of gift cards for a start.  This effectively means that you can transfer your £10 saving to a different retailer altogether.

Stocking up on stamps is another possibility.  You will also find a range of toys in some stores as well as the usual books, magazines etc.

If you can find a suitably large store – for Londoners, there is a good one just a few steps from Chancery Lane tube station for example – you could save yourself a few pounds across various Amex cards relatively easily.

The deadline for spending the £30 is 15th October.

    A little ironic as only last night I completed an AMEX survey on the BAPP card (& how it compares to other cards).
    One of my moans was that WH Smiths don’t accept AMEX – shows how long since I’ve needed to go there!

    WHSmith also sell Amex gift cards – these do attract a £2.95 service fee, so you’ll pay £22.95 for a £30 card with this offer – not bad considering you can then spend them anywhere that accepts Amex.

      According to the T&Cs you should be able to get this credit when ordering online as well:
      “Save the offer to your Card to get a £10 statement credit when you spend £30 or more on your Card at WHSmith in-store or online by 15 October 2014.”.

    Be helpful if WH Smiths sold the Visa Cards (the ones with the fee) that you can liquidate through NS&I. Would be good enough to net off the fee on 2 x £50 cards, earn a small amount of Avios/MR points on the purchase plus another £100 (per card) towards a spending limit of a 241 or sign up bonus

      I saw a Western Union card in mine, fee was 4.95 (I think, may have been 3.95) on a £50 card, you could just buy those and pickup the cash from a WU!

      I picked up a Vanilla Mastercard at a WH Smith today, couldn’t use it on NS&I though, it’s payment screen said the card number wasn’t valid.

      Although interestingly in the T&Cs it doesn’t make any mention of the £30 spend being in one transaction, so spend another £8 and you may well trigger it, or ask Amex CS to manually add the credit!

        Good spot about the T&Cs saying it doesn’t have to be in one transaction Alan, I always assumed for all these Amex promos it had to be one transaction but looking through my offers most of them don’t say this.

          IIRC the Hilton one said this but as you say the others haven’t – definitely easier to do in one if you can but I think it’s not unreasonable to raise it with CS for manual credit if you’ve made sufficient separate transactions.

          I think in the past these offers have stipulated a ‘single’ transaction, but yes this one simply states a total spend before X date.

    WH Smith rudely refused to sell me a Prezzo gift card (in with some other items) if I was paying by credit credit card – debit card only they said !
