40% discount redeeming SPG points in Las Vegas – a decent deal?

Links on Head for Points may support the site by paying a commission.  See here for all partner links.

In January, Starwood Preferred Guest – the W, Westin, Sheraton, Luxury Collection, St Regis etc hotel group – announced a partnership with Las Vegas hotel group Caesars.

Caesars runs the following resorts in Las Vegas and Atlantic City:

  • Bally’s Atlantic City, NJ
  • Bally’s Las Vegas, NV
  • Caesars Atlantic City, NJ
  • Caesars Palace Las Vegas, NV
  • Flamingo Las Vegas, NV
  • Harrah’s Atlantic City, NJ
  • Harrah’s Lake Tahoe, NV
  • Harrah’s Las Vegas, NV
  • Harrah’s New Orleans, LA
  • Harrah’s Reno, NV
  • Harvey’s Lake Tahoe, NV
  • Nobu Hotel at Caesars Palace, NV
  • Paris Las Vegas, NV
  • Planet Hollywood Las Vegas, NV
  • The Quad Las Vegas, NV
  • Rio Las Vegas, NV
  • Showboat Atlantic City, NJ

If you stay at any of the above properties, you will earn 2 Starwood points per $1 charged to your room.  You will also earn ‘nights’ towards earning Starwood elite status (capped at a maximum of 10 per year from Caesars properties, and they do not count towards SPG lifetime status) although oddly it will not count as a ‘stay’ if you earn status on the basis of stays.

Starwood Preferred Guest benefits are NOT given at Caesars hotels.  Don’t expect free internet, free breakfast or an upgrade.

SPG also let you redeem your points for rooms in Las Vegas.  Full details are on the SPG website.  The problem with this arrangement is that the redemption rates are very high compared to the standard prices of Las Vegas hotels, especially midweek.

Between November 7th and December 30th, you can save up to 40% on SPG redemptions in Las Vegas.  This promotion is not mentioned on the link above but if you click ‘Redeem’ the point prices that comes up will be discounted.

For November 19th, rooms included:

Flamingo – 5,200 points ($33.06 inc tax)

The LINQ – 5,200 points ($52.41 inc tax)

The Cromwell – 18,000 points ($128.22 inc tax)

As you can see from the cash equivalents, these are still not exceptional deals.  You can usually get around 1.5p of value for an SPG hotel redemption.  Even with a discount, these deals are coming out at around 0.5p, a terrible deal.

Hyatt has a similar partnership with M Life, which includes Bellagio and Mandalay Bay.  InterContinental also has two ‘InterContinental Alliance’ deals in Las Vegas.  In general, whilst you would be daft not to take the points if you were paying cash to stay in a property that was part of one of these partnerships, none of the Las Vegas hotel chain tie-ups make much sense from a redemption point of view.  Even, as we see here, in a ‘sale’.

Agree, though it is worth noting that you would be silly to not leverage any status you have with SPG or Hyatt with the matching program in Vegas. I got back from 10 days in Vegas on Friday, and before going I matched temporary Hyatt status a couple of months back (there was a link floating around…) to MLife Gold, which on arrival gave me buffet line priority, increased earning rates for tier credits with MLife, a discount on a couple of meals due to being Gold, etc. Similar applies I believe for SPG to Totalrewards.

Off to Vegas next year, staying in Planet Hollywood for 10 days (booked via BA) not directly.

Has anybody got personal experience of adding SPG Membership to an existing booking at check in?
I’m planning on getting SPG status challenge against either (Hilton Gold, IHG Plat, Carlson Gold) before I leave.
According to statusmatcher – I should get a challenge of 9 nights, which hopefully would work with my 10 night stay.

Also looking into purchasing the founders card for the Diamond status in Ceasars Total Rewards (£300 sign up plus fee) as with Diamond Status they should waive the resort fees ($400 – £250 as I have 2 rooms).
Basically making giving me status for free? (along with all the other perks of founderscard).

Hmm the only question would be whether they would honour the stay credit when it’s a 3rd party booking via BA – normally they wouldn’t but given it’s through this partnership programme it might work out. In this sort of situation normally email the hotel directly to ask them to add my membership number to the booking and also show my card at check-in – sometimes it works out 🙂 No experience of the Founders Card I’m afraid.

Tried to do a similar thing with another partner hotel recently and the stay didn’t credit, I tried to claim it via SPG but was told that because it was a TA booking I was out of luck. Status challenge failed 😛

OT: is there any sign of an SPG credit card sign up bonus promo this year? Am holding out for 20k!

    • Kipto says:

Ten days in Vegas !! Went there in August. Four days was more than enough.

      • Simmo says:

That was my initial thought too, but I think i’m going to hire a car and do a little exploring!

        • Alan says:

Definitely go exploring! Grand Canyon, Hoover Dam, Death Valley – all well worth a visit (although I’d avoid DV in the summer!)

          • Adey says:

Try Red Rock Canyon too. It’s right on your door step, less than 30 mins from The Strip.
