Iberia launches Avios sale – 50% off 17 business class routes & 50% off London

I spent some time on Thursday and Friday looking at the British Airways and avios.com November sales. These offer redemption flights from £1 of tax on short-haul and a 25%-50% discount on selected economy long-haul routes.

BA’s sister company, Iberia, is having an Avios redemption sale of its own.

The most interesting part of the deal is that 17 business class routes are on offer at a 50% discount.  These are:

40,000 Avios return: Chicago, Luanda

50,000 Avios return: Mexico, Guatemala, San Salvador, Panama, San Jose, Caracas, Bogotá, Quito, Guayaquil, Lima, Rio de Janeiro, Sao Paulo

60,000 Avios return: Santiago, Montevideo, Buenos Aires

You should remember that taxes on Iberia redemptions are 75% lower than the taxes on a similar British Airways redemption.  A return business class flight to Santiago is just 60,000 Avios plus €191.

Here is the small print:

All of these prices are for flights from Madrid

The discount pricing will only appear if you book direct Madrid to XXXX flights.  Any connection from London to Madrid must be booked separately.

One-way tickets can be booked for half the above numbers

The deadline for booking is November 15th

You must travel between December 1st and January 31st

You must have an Iberia Plus account to book these deals.  You can move your Avios from avios.com or ba.com to Iberia.com for free, instantly, via ‘Combine Your Avios’.  This is only possible if your Iberia Plus account is 90 days old AND has earned at least 1 Avios point.

(If you don’t have an Iberia Plus account, I would recommend you open one and try to earn 1 Avios point in it – credit a BA flight or move some hotel points or Amex points – so that you are able to take advantage of these offers the next time they come up.)

You can book these deals at iberia.com here.

Get 50% off short haul too

Iberia is also offering 50% off the following short-haul routes from Madrid in economy and business class.  The economy prices are:

4,500 Avios return:  Barcelona, La Coruna, Bilbao, Oviedo, Santander, Lisbon, Geneva, Oran, Algiers, Casablanca

7,500 Avios return:  Gran Canaria (Las Palmas), Paris, London, Brussels, Venice, Rome, Milan, Munich, Zurich, Prague, Vienna

10,000 Avios return:  Athens, Moscow, Istanbul, Dakar

12,500 Avios return:  Tel Aviv, Lagos, Malabo

You will see that London is included.  However, it is NOT a no-brainer to book a flight to Madrid via Iberia.

Using ba.com, a one-way to Madrid in economy is 7,500 Avios + £17.50.  Using iberia.com it is (in the sale, booking Blue class) 3,750 Avios + £45.15.  This big price gap opens up because Iberia does NOT have Reward Flight Saver.

Using ba.com, a one-way from Madrid in economy is 7,500 Avios + £17.50.  Using iberia.com it is (in the sale) 3,750 Avios + £16.40.

The logical thing to do is therefore to book your flight TO Madrid on ba.com and your return flight home on iberia.com!

Don’t forget that, if you want to come back in business class, some Iberia flights to London are operated by A330 aircraft with fully flat beds in business.  This is DEFINITELY worth spending the extra 7,500 Avios over economy class.

  • Aceman says:

If I have an Iberia avios account that’s been open 5 months but with no activity, will I be able to defer avios into it? Or can I buy 1000 and then immediately xfer into?

-is all avios flat bed? I have an ORD redemption on ba in December, wondering if it’s worth changing…

    • Rob says:

BA is all flat bed, not sure if Iberia is fully converted yet. For a day flight it would not matter so much.

You need activity. Transferring Amex points would do it or buy 1,000.

      • Colin MacKinnon says:

IB is all flat bed, but as mentioned in a later comment there are new flat-bed (very very nice – but I would recommend the window seat as a single or the middle pair if a couple.)

The layout is a staggered 1-2-1:

        1x 1xx1 x 1
        x1 x11x 1x
        1x 1xx1 x1
        x1 x11x 1 x etc

I would avoid the aisle seats as your legs are exposed to nudging by passing people and trolleys.

And leave space – on both types – for the Perdo Ximenez sweet sherry. #50 a half litre in the UK!

      • Lady London says:

Revised Iberia conditions sent out in past few days specifically exclude transfers of points being counted as activity.

        • jakobv84 says:

Do you have a link? I’ve just transferred 10k of Marriott (my first, last and only 10k as I don’t like their hotels much anyway) to Iberia in the hopes of it initiating my account.

    • jose armas says:

I have tried to transfer IB avios to avios.com ,but all I get is that I am only to transfer to Iberia but no the other way around!

Also now for some reason the Iberia page is not loading. is anyone having the same problem?
Does anyone have any tricks on how to move the avios from Iberiaplus?

      • Rob says:

I wrote an article recently on how to do it from Iberia if you have not seen that. Also try IB to BA then BA to Avios.com

  • N says:

Are there any direct flights from the nice bits of the UK to MAD?

  • James says:

Another BA.com bonus is the free domestic connection in the uk.. Not sure if booking on Iberia.com will have the same privileges (I guess not).

Also all IB a330s are the new 1-2-1 layout, most of the a346s have it, but the a343s are the old 2-2-2 layout and should be avoided really for long routes (they show up on the London route fairly often too).

  • Craig V says:

Every time I look on the Iberia web site, i only ever see Economy redemptions. Is there a trick to bringing up Business Class? Do I need to transfer enough Avios first?

  • Transatlantic Business Class for Just 20,000 Miles - View from the Wing - View from the Wing says:

[…] Head for Points and Loyalty Lobby are writing about the Iberia award redemption […]

  • Ivor says:

Thanks for this! Just booked a very nice trip to Ecuador in Biz for £150!

  • James says:

I will be talking further of my disastrous experience with Iberia regarding this promotion, including being kept for 2 hours on hold to Spain from the UK then being hung up on within two minutes of the call… but in the meantime I thought I would share this, as I have had an extremely similar experience in terms of customer service to many of the people below:
