Slightly OT: Earn 10% interest on your Nectar balance with Nectar Hive

Links on Head for Points may support the site by paying a commission.  See here for all partner links.

Whilst Head for Points does not officially cover Nectar points, it is a transfer partner of American Express Membership Rewards at 1:1.  You can move your 30,000 American Platinum or 20,000 American Express Gold sign-up points across to Nectar so it does offer you an extended range of redemption options.

Nectar has just launched something revolutionary.  They are paying interest on your points balance.

The current interest rate is 10% which is substantially more than you will get anywhere else these days.

The new scheme is called Nectar Hive.  In theory it is not open to all members yet.  I cannot see it on my menu bar but if I log-in and go directly to this link it does seem active.

Hive is effectively an instant access savings account.  If you move some of your points into your Hive, they disappear from the points total you see when you log in.  Those points sit in your Hive account and accrue interest at 10% annually, paid weekly.

When you want to spend your points, you can transfer them instantly back into your main account.  This means that the Hive is effectively a no-brainer as there is no reason not to use it.

If you believed that Hive would be around for a long time, you could generate a good return here.  The power of compound interest would see 10,000 points double in seven years.  You could turn a chunk of Membership Rewards points into quite a tidy sum.

Unfortunately, if the scheme did take off in a big way, I have little doubt that Nectar would reduce the interest rate or put a cap on what could be kept in your Hive.

The only thing I don’t fully understand is WHY they are doing this.

My gut feeling is that Nectar points are redeemed fairly quickly.  This makes sense since there is no benefit in saving them up – the deals do not get any better whether you are redeeming 500 points or 50,000.  Most people probably cash them in for £2.50 of vouchers every time they hit 500 points.

From Nectar’s point of view, this is bad news as they don’t get to build up a large pile of unspent cash.  10% interest may be seen as a small price to pay if it slows down the rate at which people spend their points.

My guess would be that the huge majority of Nectar points are earnt and spent (almost instantly) in Sainsburys. Sainsburys could pull out of Nectar at short notice with very little disruption to their customers. If Nectar can hold on to the points for a while longer it gives them more power around the negotiation table.

Well, I’ve deposited my 300 points, interest is 0.58 points per week, so might earn 1 or 0.

My ebay nectar account has 600, nothing to buy from Sainsbury’s right now so that should earn 1 point per week while I wait for any offers or the next ebay 10% voucher…

I won 100,000 nectar points, on an in store promotion, 18 months ago. This would have been perfect for me as I was frightened about loosing my nectar card. Anyone finding a lost card has instant access to the nectar account if the points are spent in store. I would have felt more relaxed If the majority of my winnings were banked somewhere safe.

I still have 96,000 + points (I was looking to spend them on a treat but cant decide what) so I may well be popping mine in the Hive for a while.
    Thanks for the info

    They say ‘Timing is everything’.

Was sitting on over £400 worth of Nectar, just not having spent them for a couple of years (was always good when the kids were young and money tighter as it paid for the Christmas food shop).

After reviewing the relatively poor value, I mentioned to Mrs S that she should spend them and we will just buy some Premium Bonds with what we would have spent.

Then this note comes out !

Ever since about ten years ago they had a deal whereby you could buy West End Theatre Tokens for half price using Nectar points, we haven’t spent any Nectar points, and are currently sitting on a stash of about 150,000 of them. Now, where’s that hive…….

PS I forgot to mention why…….for a similar amount of time, we’ve blagged Sainsbury vouchers at around a 5% discount, through various schemes such as You At Work, Giant Advantage, and others that I’ve long forgotten!!! I order a couple of grand a few times a year, saving about £100 each time.

I had around 50,000 nectar points stolen almost a year ago (someone managed to convert them to ebay vouchers and I’m convinced it was an inside job).

While I managed to get nectar to reinstate them, ever since then I have refused to hold a large balance for fear it happens again.

I’m a bit nervous about transfering my points over when it says it is only available to those invited? And I can’t find any way to access it other than via the link above

    • Richard says:

Quite. It’s obviously breaching the very first item in the T&C’s. Aside from any question about whether that’s ethical, if they fix their website to limit access to the page, then you’ll be in a bit of a pickle – and probably won’t be very high on their priority list when it comes to sorting things out.

    • Lady London says:

They invited me to the trial. When I hadn’t signed up they asked me why. I told them it was a scheme that I had always struggled to find a use for and now that Sainsburys had reduced the earning rate so much I didn’t see the point. Thanks to poster Charlie I might see if can blow all of my £2.68 in store next week and forget about the scheme.

  • Froggitt says:

Great post Raffles. All hived up now.

  • Fenny says:

The small print says it’s open to invited people only. But I’ve just moved some points across. I’ll leave them there for a few weeks to rack up some “interest”. I’m not currently using Sainsburys so they may as well make themselves useful until I decide what to do with them.
