Got Cathay Pacific Gold status? Did you know about these hotel benefits?

Many Head for Points readers hold a Cathay Pacific Marco Polo Club Gold card.  This is because, until March 2014, American Express was giving them away as part of the benefits package with the Amex Platinum charge card.

This was an outstanding deal since Cathay Gold gives almost all of the benefits of a British Airways Executive Club Silver card, including access to British Airways lounges.

Cathay A350-900

What I never knew, until reader Anto pointed it out to me recently, is that there are a lot of extra benefits that come with Cathay Gold which you may not know about.

Take a look at this part of the Cathay website.

Your Cathay Gold card entitles you to special benefits with partners such as Hilton, Hyatt, Fairmont, Marriott, Langham, Mandarin Oriental, Shangri-La, Swissotel, Peninsula, Swire and Ritz-Carlton.

There are also deals with Avis, Hertz and Travelex.

Some of these deals only apply to hotels or rentals in the Asia-Pacific region.  Others do not – the Mandarin Oriental benefit is applicable worldwide, for example, and gets you an upgrade, early check-in and late check-out.

If you have a Cathay Gold, it is worth being familiar with what you can get, especially if you have any Asia-Pacific travel planned before it expires.

The Cathay Pacific Marco Polo Club hotel benefits look good in theory. But the only time I ever tried to use one, the hotel chain denied all knowledge of them. And judging from this thread on Flyertalk, many others have had the same experience, even at the (higher) level of Marco Polo Diamond: http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/cathay-pacific-asia-miles/1235523-hotel-benefits-cx-diamond.html
The Avis/Hertz benefits do work, but are nothing special. Whenever I’ve checked them out ,I’ve always been able to get much lower rates using other discount codes (especially those discussed in that very helpful article on this site about Hertz some months back–many thanks Raffles).

    We do!

Tell to a hotel, it’s not classy to withhold the benefit and unprofessional to not know about them.

However, they are entirely at discretion of the hotel. They can just estimate loads and say they are full/no better room available. Best to email hotel after making a reservation.

So are you not going to tell us what they are? Only half a story here Raffles!

  • Pierre says:

Worth noting that the upgrade coupon is stackable with others, meaning that if you hold the Amex platinum (one-class upgrade) are Prefferred plus and print out the voucher, you go up three car classes!

Anyone for the “Private scarf accessorising session” at Salvatore Ferragamo?

  • Nathan says:

I didn’t sign up to the Amex plat and now this benefit has gone I don’t think I ever will, I’m very happy churning my free gold card!
I wish they gave us the same card as the US, $450 so already massively cheaper and the benefits are much better! One can only hope!
