Get a bargain in the Business Traveller charity Christmas auction

Business Traveller magazine is once again running its annual online charity auction. This year the cause is The Prince’s Trust.

They have put together a huge list of items, from flights to airline cuddy toys.  See here for full details.

It is obviously for a great cause, so do take a quick look and see if anything takes your fancy. The deadline for bids is tomorrow, December 31st.

It is limited to Business Traveller UK readers, so the competition for lots will not be huge.  I know at least one Head for Points reader was successful last year.

One interesting lot is five nights in a Club Premier Suite at Jumeirah Emirates Towers in DubaiSince I wrote about it, the hotel has started restricting passes to the beach at Madinat Jumeirah (a 5-night stay would get you two days beach access) which makes it less suitable for a beach holiday.  However, I can personally verify that the Deluxe Suites are fantastic – especially if you have young kids – so I assume the more expensive Club Suites are also very good.  The prize is worth triple the current bid of £783 as at 9pm last night.

Some of the other lots look a little overpriced based on current bidding, so be careful.  The No 1 Traveller lounge passes also seem a decent deal (current bids are around £28 and it includes entry for two people and a glass of champagne) although note that the Stansted lounge is now closed, despite what the auction notes say.

    Nothing a bargain any more…

The Emirates Towers suite was £200 a night last time I looked, cash price is over £500 a night.

Rob, have you considered doing an article on the wider subject of charity donations with miles potential?
My family, much to my wife’s chagrin, decided to mainly give charity donations in lieu of actual presents this Christmas. I ended up doing some standard global giving donations in the first tranche, but then remembered that there might be opportunities to benefit myself from making a donation (other than the standard fuzzy-warm-righteous feeling to which you’re entitled)

I made my final donations through e-miles.
Not a great ROI, but something, nevertheless.

Back in your Philippines Hurricane relief post you mentioned some ways in which points collectors can donate or even receive points as part of helping a particular campaign. Do you have any guidance for the general situation?

    Thanks in advance,

Hope you’re having in Irkutsk! I’ve never really looked at this – my gut feeling was always that if I recommended making charitable donations via credit card, I would get criticism (not unreasonably) for dumping the charity with the 2% card processing fee rather than next to nothing if a debit card had been used.

Not many bargain – but got two No1 lounge passes for 32 quid which is OK… worth £50+ inc the champagne

Ooops! Might have just “won” 2 nights at the Kempinski Bansko. Just as well Bansko is somewhere I’ve wanted to go!
