£100 cashback on £300 Amex Travel spend for Platinum cardholders

Links on Head for Points may support the site by paying a commission.  See here for all partner links.

American Express Travel has launched a very decent bonus promotion for Platinum charge card holders who spend £300 or more at their website.

To qualify for the £100 rebate, you need to spend £300 or more on pre-paid hotels, plane tickets, car hire or experiences in one transaction before 26th February.

You MUST also register your Platinum card at this website before booking.  Only 6,600 registrations will be allowed.

This bonus is in addition to the standard bonus of 1 extra Membership Rewards point per £1 spent, on top of your base earnings.

This offer is probably best used for airline tickets or car hire.  Bookings hotels through American Express Travel runs the risk of it being treated as a third party booking and not qualifying for points or status credit – although you have a better chance of getting credit via Amex (because of their huge business travel booking business) than Expedia etc.  That said, for a £100 discount you may be willing to take the risk.

Note that hotel bookings via Fine Hotels & Resorts are specifically excluded, although this would be the case anyway as these bookings are never pre-paid.

If there is a chance that you might be spending £300 on flights or hotels before 26th February, I recommend that you register here just in case the 6,600 target registrations is hit.  Don’t bother trying if you don’t have a Platinum card as it will reject the registration.

PS.  The article I wrote for the American Express Travel site is still there, take a look if you missed it the first time.

Great offer but my taxes on the flight to Amman will be <300 so going to leave this for someone who can benefit.

  • David says:

By invitation only? That’s what I’m getting.

    • John W says:

Same here with Amex plat charge card.

    • Rob says:

Definitely not the case, my Plat registered fine and I am not invited. It is advertised on the Plat website for everyone to see.

      • Ralph says:

Do you have a link to that page other than the link in your email Raffles, tried on phone, tablet and pc all with the same result…sorry, this offer is by invitation only… can’t see the offer anywhere when logged in to my plat account. Thanks.

        • Rob says:

When you log-in (at americanexpress.co.uk/platinum and NOT at the statement website) there are rotating promotions at the top of the home page. It shows as one those, at least for me.

          • Ralph says:

Thanks Rob, I have gotten to the bottom of this with the help of an excellent Customer Services chap at American Express. Apparently, the story goes that there is a technical issue with card numbers whose 5th number is a 0 resulting in the “by invitation only” message
So, American Express has decided to credit me £100 manually once I make the qualifying transaction. The chap gave me his extension no. and has put a note on the system, all I have to do is call him when the transaction shows up on my account. 5* service from Amex as always 🙂

  • Ralph says:

‘SORRY. This offset it’s by invitation only.’ Is the message I got when trying to register.

    • Ralph says:

‘SORRY. This offer is by invitation only.’ Is the message I got when trying to register.

      • John W says:

Check you are filling the card number in correctly and not pasting it in or using an auto filler.

I retyped mine manually and worked second time

  • Tom says:

Worked for me on my Amex Plat.. Thanks!!

  • Ivt says:

Worked for me even though no communications was made by Amex about this offer – out of interest how are these offers communicated? It is ironical that I always have to come here to learn about Amex offers available to me

    • flyoff says:

This offer only showed up online in the Amex Plat website as a one pane of scrolling offers and news in the travel section. I did not receive an email for it. Amex can be slow in communicating offers.

  • Alastair says:

Does anyone know whether there is a stipulation that the £300 spend must be for a single air ticket or should 2 £150 tickets qualify?

I’m still yet to receive the £50 statement credit for the Tripadvisor offer back in December. Booked a pair of return flights coming to around £300 – however on statement flights were charged imdividually resulting in 2 transactions less than £250. Have emailed customer services – no reply as of yet..

    • sandgrounder says:

You should get that credited. I had a similar issue with the last £50 offer and it was credited manually no problems.

    • Paul says:

The £300 must be a single transaction. Amex should honour the deal if both tickets were to same destination and same flights date and time. Most air tickets even when booked together are shown deparately on credit and charge cards so this should not be a problem.

    • G Flyer says:

Alastair, I had the same problem with the £50 Tripadvisor offer: I booked 2 flights over the spend threshold, but when they showed on my statement they had been itemised separately.

One quick call to AMEX Customer Services resolved the problem for me. The agent manually added the missing points then are there whilst I was still on the phone. Plus, they apologised. Reminds me why I love AMEX, compared to some of the other less customer-centric providers like Lloyds.

    • Ralph says:

Same problem here but a phone call did the trick…

    • adey says:

      Ha ha,

I experienced the same problem a while back. Two flights when through the Amex travel website as one transaction but turned up as 2 individual charges on my Amex statement. Didn’t chase it at the time – think I’ll give them a ring now and try and get the credit.

  • Paul says:

I have registered and tried to book a 2 night stay and 2 day car hire for an upcoming trip. The web site will not process a hotel and car combination but will process flight/car or flight/ hotel/car. I then called but the offer is only for online bookings.
I have taken this up with amex who responded very quickly to say it would be reviewed. Will let you know how I get on
There is no targeting of this offer it is available to all platinum cards primary card holders ( not sure about supplementary cards) but you do need to register.

  • Gordon says:

Is it one per card? Can you do 2x £300 and receive two discounts?

    • Rob says:

No. It may work on supplementary cards – check the small print – if so you could double up that way.
