News in brief:

£10 sign-up code for minicab app Kabbee – exclusive to Head for Points

I wrote about Kabbee a few days ago.  Kabbee works with 70 individual minicab firms across London, giving access to 10,000 vehicles. The navigation system is the same as Uber or GetTaxi, allowing you to track your car as it approaches.

The Kabbee guys saw my article and got in touch to offer me an exclusive promotional code.

Download the app or register online (smartphone not required) and add Kabbee code [deleted as now expired].

The code must be activated by 31st March and is valid for two weeks.  The fare needs to be over £10.01 for the £10 discount to kick in – however, as Kabbee tells you your fare when you book, you will know whether a trip qualifies or not.

The iOS app is here, the Android app is here. It is also available for Blackberry 10 and Windows Phone 8. If you don’t have a smartphone, you can also create an account and book via their website.

Amazing €999 KLM business class fares to China

KLM is currently offering some exceptionally good deals out of Dublin to China.

You need to book 30 days in advance and stay between 7 and 30 days.  There is no end date – you can book the full 11 months ahead if you like.  Availability is OK.

Fares are valid to Chengdu, Hangzhou and Xiam’en.  The short-haul flight to Amsterdam will be in Economy if you are on an Aer Lingus codeshare.

Don’t want a trip to China?  Think strategically.  These cities are all well connected and you should be able to pick up an onward flight to elsewhere in Asia.  Avios redemptions on Cathay Pacific would get you to Hong Kong and onwards.

The offer is not detailed on the special offers pages of the Irish KLM website.  You can book via the standard KLM site here.

KLM is a SkyTeam member which would let you redeem the miles you earn on Delta, Air France, Czech etc.  Flying Blue (Air France / KLM) and Delta are Amex Membership Rewards partners if you needed to top up your account later. Alternatively, Aeromexico Club Premier allows family accounts which may be beneficial if you were travelling as a group.

The same fares are available from some other European countries such as Germany if Dublin is not convenient for you.  They are not available from the UK or Netherlands however.  Trips from many of these countries would have the short-haul flight in Business Class as well as the long haul.

Rocketmiles flash sale – earn double Avios

Hotel booking site Rocketmiles is running a 24 hour flash sale at the moment.  It is already underway and will end at 8am US central time which is 2pm Friday in London.

Like Kaligo, Rocketmiles offers Avios, Virgin Flying Club and various other airline miles when you book through them – although you will not earn points or status credit from the hotel as the booking is treated as non-qualifying.  The more expensive the hotel, the more miles you get.  All bookings from first-time users before 2pm will earn double miles.

This cannot be combined with the current Rocketmiles bonus of 3,000 Avios for your first booking so Avios collectors would need to weigh up which deal is more generous.  Collectors of any other airline miles don’t have the option and should stick with the flash sale.

It’s probably worth mentioning that if you do book a separate ticket to HK or elsewhere you probably will still need a China visa as you’d probably have to go land side to collect luggage and re-enter

    • tony says:

Fair point but Chengdu offers the free 72hr visa for many nationals (including Brits). Not sure about the other cities.

  • James Ward says:

If you’re not already collecting in any SkyTeam program, I recommend you post any miles you earn to Delta. Although widely regarded as one of the weakest FF currencies around, they do have some advantages:

    1. They never expire – very useful if only collecting a few every now and again. Compare this to FlyingBlue, which expire 20 months after your last flight.
    2. They’re an Amex and SPG transfer partner
    3. If flying ex-USA, there are no fuel surcharges (but they do charge ex-Europe)
    4. As well as their other partners, you can now redeem on Virgin Atlantic
    5. Bizarrely, for a program known for its difficulty redeeming, Delta SkyMiles are a great way to get to Australia (via LAX) on Virgin Autstralia. Not cheap (160,000 for business class return) but the tax is under £100. I’m flying this route in a few weeks for the second time in three years. It works for me because I can combine it with a business trip to the U.S.

    • Rob says:

      Thanks James, all good points.

    • jonboy says:

you had me at “they never expire” lol

      great tip thanks!

      • Jeremy I says:

Thanks James – completely agree, especially on non-expiry and them being an Amex partner.

    • gs says:

Alaska might be a better alternative, especially as they offer status matches which could result in 125% bonus miles on business fares.

      • Rob says:

Yes, Alaska is an interesting one I have covered before because you could top up your Emirates miles with some BA flights and then redeem on BA. Now that fuel surcharges have come off BA short haul, redeeming for BA via other airline partners is more attractive – you are no longer looking at £120 in extras.

      • RIccati says:

At the moment, they would not do a status match from a non-US airline. FT discussions suggest they think they have too many non-US members.

  • Andrew says:

Whats up with the cookies… are they really necessary?

    • Rob says:

The cookies have always been there, the site would not work otherwise. I have ‘got legal’ for want of a better phrase and included the same notice that every other European based website is legally obliged to show you.

  • Tim says:

Shame I don’t know my flight dates for my autumn trip to the Far East this far out. The €999 tickets do not allow changes and don’t seem to show any availability past August. 🙁

    Great deal though..

  • Jo says:

Has anyone actually tried booking with Kabbee? I just tried a booking online. It’s debited my credit card but for the full amount, but my Payment History has added £10 to my account. What this means presumably is that you actually need to book for some other trip to use up the credit. The promo code can’t be used as a one off. I’ve cancelled my booking and now my credit with Kabbee is the full price of the trip plus £10.

    • Rob says:

That isn’t how it is meant to work, the promo code is definitely designed to cover your first trip.
