Cathay Pacific launches Dusseldorf to Hong Kong – a new Avios option

Hong Kong-based airline Cathay Pacific has announced a new service from Dusseldorf starting on September 1st.

The service will initially operate four days a week on Monday, Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday.  The outbound leaves Dusseldorf at 12.35pm which would make it possible to connect the same day if you took a very early British Airways flight.  Coming back, it lands in Germany at 7.15am which is very convenient for a hop back to the UK.

Cathay business class

It will use a Boeing 777-300ER aircraft in a four class configuration.  First Class contains just six suites.  Business Class contains 53 seats in a herringbone layout.

As a oneworld alliance member, you can redeem your Avios points on Cathay.  Writing a post on them is on my to-do list because they do not add fuel surcharges.

The Dusseldorf flights were not showing on ba.com yesterday.  For comparison, though, Amsterdam to Hong Kong on Cathay Pacific costs 120,000 Avios plus just £91 return in Business Class.   Dusseldorf will also be 120,000 Avios return as the distance is almost identical (5730 vs 5773 miles).

You can find more details on the Cathay Pacific website here.

PS.  Remember that Cathay Pacific recently launched a Manchester to Hong Kong service as well.  A full review of all oneworld flights from the UK is coming up soon.

  • JQ says:

150000 Avios if booked after April 28….

  • Hywel says:

The lack of fuel surcharges is amazing on CX. I’ve just booked KUL-HKG-TPE-NRT-HKG-KUL all in business class using Avios and the total taxes for all 5 flights came to £70, mostly Hong Kong and Japan airport tax!

  • Danny says:

CX most certainly do add fuel surcharges to award tickets. Those of us who redeem on CX’s own frequent flyer program have to pay them all the time. Is the suggestion that, for some reason, BA are not collecting them on CX redemptions at the moment? (I’m pretty sure I’ve had to pay them when I’ve redeemed Avios for CX tickets in the past)

    • Rob says:

That £90 must be almost all airport and security fees, no surcharge

    • JQ says:

CX fuel surcharges are heavily regulated by the HKCAD

Currently they can only charge HK$356 for this flight (BA can also only charge the same amount ex-HKG)

  • Flight Risk says:

I’m about to book to Cathy Pacific from Manchester – Hong Kong in March then Hong Kong to Sydney. Only economy thought 55k +179

  • Londonbus says:

LHR-MAN-HKG is a good option. Although you’re in Business UK LHR-MAN the charges MAN-HKG in business are low (£211 – mainly APD) and if you do a through booking with Avios you get the LHR-MAN leg for free (before 28 April)

    • Rome77 says:

I though intercontinental connections would still see the initial domestic leg free after 28 April?

      • JQ says:

That’s correct, you’d certainly get a MAN-LHR free if connecting to a CX flight in LHR, I hope the system is programmed to treat a MAN connection in the same way!

  • AndyGWP says:

Re: the herringbone seating you mention / pictured, we will shortly be doing our first trip in this config… What seats are best for a couple? (that like each other and ideally would like to comfortably chat etc!! Lol)

    The centre pair of seats?
    Or
The window and a centre seat?

    • Rob says:

Not flown this but Qatar has similar on 787. Middle pair best.

    • CV3V says:

Try and get the middle seats, and if you prefer, book in the ‘mini cabin’ just behind first class, there is just 2 or 3 rows of business class seats there making it quiet. The remainder of business class then being behind the galley.

    • Eastland says:

Ditto – not flown it but BA first is similar set up and you can hold hands and chat so Middle would be best. The other thing to say is go near the front or near the back if you plan to walk around to get to your partner for dinner etc. Its quite annoying having to walk the whole way around if you go mid-cabin!

  • Keith says:

Just flown CX Biz Class Hong Kong to London. There is a lovely little business cabin just behind First, just 8 seats and no baby basinet!

Travelled with the Mrs and had the centre seats, it is not that easy to have a conversation as all seats are quite private….so it was perfect!

Food was excellent and makes BA look awful by comparison. Also rather nice to be called by your name too.

  • James says:

It’s also easy to award availability on CX, MAN for example is wide open 🙂
