News in brief:

British Airways to return to Birmingham

According to press reports – although the flights are not timetabled yet – Sun-Air of Scandinavia, the small airline which operates as a British Airways franchise, is taking over the Birmingham to Gothenburg route which bmi Regional is dropping in March.

Sun-Air planes operate in BA livery and the flights will be available on ba.com for Avios redemption.  They will be included in Reward Flight Saver.

Other Sun-Air routes include Manchester to Billund (home of Legoland), Manchester to Gothenburg, London City to Billund and London City to Hamburg.

£4.20 of value back on a train ticket

Here is an interesting one.  As you will know from recent articles, after February 28th your East Coast Rewards points will be turned into Nectar points at the rate of 6 to 1 (ie 3p each).

You can still join East Coast Rewards via their refer-a-friend link here – you must be logged in to the East Coast site to see this.  You can use this to make yourself a decent return on the next train ticket you buy.

If you need to book a train ticket, refer a family member with a Nectar account and open an East Coast account in their name.

Book your ticket via the new East Coast Rewards account in that name.  You get 40 bonus points for referring them and they get 100 points with their first transaction.  Those 140 points will convert to £4.20 of Nectar points.

Remember that you need to book by February 28th when East Coast Rewards closes.

New Hyatt Gold Passport Diamond benefits

Hyatt Gold Passport is the smallest of the major hotel loyalty schemes. You shouldn’t ignore it, however, because it is very clear that there is an inverse relationship between the size of a hotel chain and the generosity of its loyalty scheme.

Hyatt Gold Passport and Starwood Preferred Guest are far more lucrative than, say, Marriott Rewards because these companies know that you have to go out of your way to find their hotels.

The new Hyatt benefits for Diamond members are not mind blowing but should be welcomed.

Firstly, they guarantee that if you use your points to book a room for someone else, they will receive your Diamond privileges. This often happens at other hotel chains by accident but with Hyatt it is now guaranteed.

Secondly, Diamond members will receive two entry passes for United Airlines lounges each year. This is unlikely to benefit anyone who does not fly United in economy and has no Star Alliance status.

Finally, when a hotel has a premium and standard level of wi-fi available, Diamond members will now receive the premium version without charge. This was often not the case previously.

As I said above, there is nothing here to get excited about but it does show that Hyatt is continuing to make an effort.  Full details of Hyatt Gold Passport Diamond status can be found here.

Is Raffles being paid by Tesco? 😉

    • mark2 says:

One day he will get 1000 points for inviting me to have a Tesco card, causing me to get 1000 points too.
Why do you ask (particularly on this item which does not mention Tesco)?

He will also get some points for inviting me to have an Amex Gold card increasing my welcome bonus there too. Most of us, I believe, are very happy for Raffles to get these perks in return for all of the invaluable information he collects and presents to us, especially about Tesco which is usually my main source of Avios.

      • Rob says:

If you mean ‘why is the insurance thing being mentioned again?’, the answer is mostly ‘because I mention this every few months for the benefit of new readers’ and a tiny bit ‘filler’ as I took yesterday off! Although I did spent much of it having lunch with the CEO of Kaligo, so not really ‘off’.

      • callum says:

They obviously asked because he said other bloggers were being paid by nectar.

I’d personally be interested in who is getting paid and/or how they know about it!

        • Rob says:

          Ah, OK.

I saw an article on another travel site where the blogger was raving about Nectar, and in small print at the bottom she had written (I paraphrase) ‘Nectar paid me to write this but I wouldn’t have written it if I didn’t think they were great, honest’.

I am perfectly happy to take money from Nectar but it will need to be for advertising and nothing else!

BA being back in Brum is great news, albeit it’s only Sun-Air.

  • Smid says:

BA flying from Birmingham? My god, they might get a reputation of flying somewhere which isn’t London.

    Yeah, right.

    • callum says:

They already do, mainly through franchises like this.

      • Smid says:

Really? I’ll look out for a single BA plane when I go through there the next ten times. Not seen one the last ten times, when I started going through weekly…

  • Mark says:

PS. Nectar is currently paying selected travel bloggers – and possibly non-travel bloggers too – to write nice things about them. Be suspicious of any article you see which suggests that it is the greatest loyalty scheme known to man. We all know different …

Well that will see them getting an outright ban on google.

  • Sam says:

Stuff Birmingham – surely the big news is the new BA (well, Sun Air) flight from Cambridge to Gothenburg starting 2nd March! “Executive Club Members will earn Avios and Tier Points on this service”.

Or does Cambridge count as London’s 5th/6th/7th (?) airport?

  • oyster says:

I assume that, as you need to be logged in to see the referral page, you need to already be an east coast rewards member to use that nectar promo?

    • Rob says:

Yes – but if you can no longer sign up, I can refer you if you want – email me at raffles [at] headforpoints.co.uk
