New list of hugely discounted IHG PointBreaks coming on Wednesday

Links on Head for Points may support the site by paying a commission.  See here for all partner links.

Yesterday, IHG Rewards Club (the Holiday Inn, HI Express, Crowne Plaza, InterContinental etc group) released a sample of the new list of PointBreaks redemptions.

Without question, PointBreaks are the most generous hotel redemption deal available.

There will be 150 or so hotels on the full list tomorrow afternoon.  All of these hotels will be available for just 5,000 IHG Rewards Club points per night – saving up to 45,000 points on InterContinental redemptions.

(Remember that you can get 60,000 IHG points by signing up for their £99 credit card via this link. You also get Platinum status with IHG as an extra benefit.  The bonus would get you TWELVE free nights at any PointBreaks hotel and with your Platinum status you may even get upgraded.)

The biggest downside with PointBreaks is the random selection of hotels.  If you want something in New York, Paris or London then forget about it.  There have been plenty of gems in the past though, such as the InterContinental Aphrodite Hills resort in Cyprus (now reflagged) and the InterContinental Athens.

PointBreaks availability is very limited.  I will post the full list as soon as it is available on Wednesday afternoon.  Bookings are refundable as with a standard reward reservation.  The list of properties will be shown here on the IHG website although they are usually bookable for a few hours before the list appears.  Don’t get confused by the old list – you are looking for the list which runs until May.

Note that any change to your booking will result in it being repriced. For example, if you want a Friday to Monday stay but it later turns out that you can’t get there until Saturday, you CANNOT simply cancel the Friday night. This would result in a repricing at the full rate (up to 10x higher!). Not arriving until the Saturday would see your reservation already cancelled for a ‘no show’ on Friday.

There is a limit of two bookings (of any length) per person per hotel during each PointBreaks period.

You will be able to book these hotels for dates up to May 31st.

The 10 hotels which we know will be on the list are:

  • InterContinental Lhasa Paradise, Lhasa, XZ, China
  • Crowne Plaza Suites Tequendama Bogota, Colombia
  • Hotel Indigo San Jose Forum Costa Rica
  • Holiday Inn Genoa City, Genova, Italy
  • Holiday Inn Express Tampa-Anderson Rd/Veterans Exp, Florida, United States
  • Staybridge Suites West Edmonton, Alberta, Canada
  • Candlewood Suites Bloomington, Indiana, United States

I told you it was an eclectic list.

At the end of the day, it all comes down to a simple fact – if there is a hotel on the list in a place you need or want to go, you’ve got a bargain.  Even if that place is Doncaster.

Someone I know with a very flexible diary booked himself into a Crowne Plaza beach resort for a month via PointBreaks last year.  It’s the sort of thing I would be tempted to do myself if I could work remotely and didn’t have family commitments.

Normally a few of weeks, mines took 3

  • sandgrounder says:

Any idea how long it takes for points to transfer from the Barclaycard? I know they have the right number because I got the plat upgrade in days, but I have been waiting almost a month for my statement points and the bonus.

    • Alex says:

It says up to 8 weeks and it was exactly 8 weeks later meaning I missed out on using them. However make sure they do.

    • Dave R says:

I’ve been waiting 6 weeks for my points so far but nothing yet. Plat status only took about 2 weeks.

    • Nick says:

I got my 60K last week after almost exactly 8 weeks. FYI, just in case you weren’t aware, they will post direct to your IHG account. They won’t show on your IHG Barclaycard statement as points earned.

    • Daleroxxu says:

I just got mine, took about 5 weeks.

“Without question, PointBreaks are the most generous hotel redemption deal available.”

I am going to slightly question this by submitting SPG Category 1 and 2 weekend nights, at 2k and 3k points a night…

    • Rob says:

Good look finding many of those. Although I see the Dragonara is down a category and a couple of UK Starwoods are now Cat 2.

      Sheraton Athlone now Cat 1!

      • Tom euflyer says:

Yes, I am doubtless biased by my proximity to the Sheraton Catania. Not a great hotel by any means, but at 3,000 points a night…

(It’s also surely better than the Holiday Inn Darlington – A1 Scotch Corner)

  • takke says:

Isn’t there now a limit on how many bookings each person can make? So booking 30 seperate bookings for a month long stay wouldn’t work.

    • Rob says:

Good point. Will rewrite that line. I forget they changed the rules.

    • Simmo says:

Is that link from the previous period?

Confusing, as the date mentions February. But seems more hotels are listed there? (Although they don’t match the above list!).

  • Fenny says:

    Mine arrived last week sometime.

  • Andrew says:

By pure coincidence I’d booked a reward night at one of these hotels just a few days ago for mid-May. I assume I’ll be able to cancel and rebook after Wednesday? Will I be allowed to book the new stay before cancelling my existing one?

    • xcalx says:

Will I be allowed to book the new stay before cancelling my existing one?

Yes and its advisable to to go this route as popular hotel awards can be gone within minutes the full updated list will appear on IHG here later today.

  • Steve Clarke says:

There should be no reason for you not to do this Andrew works for me

  • PJK says:

Sounds very interesting – I have a basic IHG account but have just applied for the Visa so my 60k will hopefully post mid/end April.

Presumably the points need to be in your account at the time you wish to book?
    Thanks
