More news in brief:

Earn 1,000 FREE Club Carlson points

Club Carlson is running a special promotion on Twitter on March 19th called #hashtaghotelpromo

In order to take part you will need to be following Club Carlson.  To bribe you to do so, Club Carlson is giving away 1,000 points (worth £5 of free stay in my book) if you follow them on Twitter.

You need to visit this page on the Club Carlson website and click the button to link your Twitter account.  However, there are problems with the site.  A form is meant to pop up to take your Club Carlson details – I got it to work once, but every other attempt failed.  You may have more joy.

Note that your Twitter account must be 30 days old to take part.

100% bonus on Heathrow Rewards transfers to Etihad Guest

Etihad is offering a 100% bonus on all transfers to Heathrow Rewards before the end of April.

This is not a bad deal if you have an Etihad Guest stash.

To be honest, I am becoming a little wary of transferring Heathrow Rewards points to airlines at the standard rate.  Remember that instead of swapping 500 points for 500 miles, you can also swap them for a £5 shopping voucher.  If you don’t get over 1p of value per mile when redeeming it is a bad deal.  Transfer bonuses also pop up from time to time, although they are less common for Avios.

I am OK with transferring Heathrow Rewards to Lufthansa Miles & More because those miles are harder to earn – they are not American Express Membership Rewards or Tesco partners.   (Technically, you can transfer Amex to Starwood to Lufthansa but that will only get you 0.625 miles per Amex point, assuming you move from Starwood in chunks of 20,000.)

More details can be found on the Etihad website here.  The same page also has the best current Heathrow Rewards sign-up bonus of 1,000 points for a £25 spend.

CityJet 350

Up to 25% off CityJet flights

CityJet, the short-haul airline operating mainly from London City Airport, is offering a discount on flights as part of a promotion with Hertz.

Full details are here.  There is no requirement to book a car rental to get the flight discount but if you do, there is a 15% Hertz discount too.

You need to book before March 31st for travel by the end of May.  I struggled to find examples where I was getting a full 25% off but it certainly does knock off a few quid.

CityJet routes from City include Dublin, Avignon, Rotterdam, Amsterdam, Paris, Deauville, Florence, Nantes, Toulon, Antwerp and Dresden.

I also had problems registering for the 1,000 free Club Carlson points – wouldn’t work using Firefox. Switched to Chrome and successfully registered.

There is also a new promo at select Park Plaza hotels – earn 1,500 points a night if you opt out of houskeeping services. http://www.parkplaza.com/offers/8435861/ (As someone who tends to hang the Do Not Disturb sign for my entire stay, I would like to see this sort of promo become commonplace.)

But with all this recent generosity from Carlson (especially the current 30k promo), a devaluation can only be just around the corner!

    • Frenske says:

There was a devaluation last year I think. A lot of their properties moved a redemption band up or down. Mostly up.

      • Rob says:

It wasn’t so bad. New top band launched but only 7 hotels in it IIRC. 44k still gets you a London 4 star.

    • Rob says:

      That is very generous!

    CityJet

Given your focus on earning miles, I’m assuming that CityJet is a miles desert other than Flying Blue credit for AF and KL codeshares.

You already commented on that aspect at https://headforpoints.com/2013/05/20/no-flying-blue-qualiflying-flights-with-cityjet-citysaver-fares/

    • R says:

CityJet is no longer part of AF / member of Flying Blue so it won’t give you any FB miles status / at all. If I remember correctly, it was sold to a German private equity fund last year.

Grr! Wonder if I can get away with linking my wife’s Twitter to my Club Carlson account…?

  • Rick says:

How do Club Carlson know who you are once you’ve followed them on Twitter? They didn’t seem to ask for my CC account number at any point.

    • TimS says:

There is a separate popup box that should appear after you link to twitter where it asks fr your twitter name, club carlson email & club carlson number.

I don’t think it works via mobiles or certain browsers.

I anaged to get it to work just ow via firefox on my laptop but it wouldn’t work earlier on my android phone.

      • Rob says:

Worked on Chrome at home, failed on Chrome in the office and IE at home and office.

  • vindaloo says:

Not useful to everyone, but the best value redemption for Heathrow Rewards, at 2p per point, is parking at the airport.

    • Rob says:

…. to the extent that paying for official LHF parking is ever ‘good value’ 🙂

      • vindaloo says:

Indeed. We rarely do it but our kids like the T5 pods so we occasionally book those when it’s not too extortionate.

    • jeff says:

I am interested to know how you use points to achieve 2p. I guess it is not via a room redemption where you are mostly interested in the car parking privilege, or is it?

  • Fenny says:

Has anyone had success in matching a Cathay Gold with no usage to Etihad Gild? It’s on my list to do, but I’m wondering if having some miles would make it work better. I have enough Heathrow Reward points to exchange some, given that I rarely use them for anything anyway.

    • Rob says:

They would be far more interested in activity, ie flights, on the Cathay account.

  • Globetrotter7 says:

I won a GoPro Hero 3 camera last year during Club Carlson’s #hashtaghotelpromo “Twitter party” (thank you Raffles). I don’t know if I can take part in this one as I already follow them on Twitter but would encourage anyone wanting to take part. It’s well worth the tweets. Good luck!

  • Mark says:

Can someone point me at a link to refer someone else for a Lloyds Avios Rewards card so we each get 4500 bonus? I can’t seem to find it.

    Thanks.

    • Rob says:

      share.avios.com/Lloyds

Takes a week for the referral email to arrive!
