Maximise your Avios, air miles and hotel points

What is the best use of American Express Membership Rewards points?

Links on Head for Points may support the site by paying a commission.  See here for all partner links.

I have written numerous articles before about using American Express Membership Rewards points and a few pieces on how I value airline miles and hotel points.  This meant that, when a reader suggested I summarise the best ways to use Amex points, I had a lot of existing data to pull together.

This will become another reference article for the site.  It does NOT cover every Membership Rewards redemption but it does cover the bulk of the pseudo-cash, cash and travel options.  All that is missing is the various merchandise options and they are generally poor value.

The Amex Membership Rewards website is here if you want to look for yourself at what is available.

Please post below with any comments, observations or anecdotes about your own redemptions.

0.75p – 1.5p per point

Airline milesMy most recent piece on valuing Avios points, based on the post-devaluation numbers, is here.  It is impossible to tie down a tighter range because of the number of different airline partners and the various ways (upgrade, long-haul, short-haul, economy, premium) you can redeem.

1p per point (potentially)

Melia Hotel redemptions.  You redeem for a voucher for a free night – 14,000 points for Grand Melia down to 5,500 points for a Tryp Hotel.  The issue is that ‘Offer runs for limited dates only’ and it is not clear if there is a price cap beyond which vouchers will not be accepted for that night.  (Go to the MR website and type ‘Melia’ in the search box to see the options.)

1p per point

Club Carlson hotel transfersI explain my valuation in this article. [EDIT:  Following the June 1st 2015 devaluation, Club Carlson points are worth less than they were.  That said, 1p per Amex point is still possible, just more difficult.]

0.75p per point

Starwood Preferred Guest hotel transfersI explain my valuation in this article.  1.5p per SPG point means, at a 2:1 exchange rate, 0.75p per Amex point.

0.66p per point

Hilton HHonors hotel transfersI explain my valuation in this article.  Remember that the conversion rate is 1:2 to Hilton.

0.5p per point

Retailer gift cards – Starbucks, M&S, Harrods, SpaFinder, iTunes, car hire vouchers etc.

0.5p per point (potential for up to 1p per point)

Value of a Nectar point, given that you can redeem Amex points for Nectar points at a 1:1 ratio.  Occasional Nectar redemptions offer better value than this, eg during a ‘double up’ promotion at Sainsbury you would get 1p.  Photobox gives 0.6p per Nectar point.  Caffe Nero gives roughly 0.75p.  Pizza Express gives 0.75p but there are restrictions on use.

0.5p per point

Approximate value of using your points for Eurostar tickets (15,000 points for Standard, 30,000 for Standard Premier) based on the maximum cash price of tickets which are offered for redemption.  This article explains more.

0.45p per point

Redeeming for TripFlex statement credit – ie using your points to settle a travel-related charge to your statement.  I explain more in this article.

0.45p per point

Redeeming for American Express gift cards which can be used in any UK shop or online store which accepts Amex.

0.45p per point

Linking your Amex account to amazon.co.uk and paying for your purchases directly with points (more in this article)

0.4p per point

Redeeming for American Express statement credit. This is fall back option – there is no excuse for redeeming for anything worse than this ratio.

0.19p – 0.33p per point

Typical merchandise redemptions, eg Samsung Gear Fit at £89 on Amazon vs 45,000 points (0.19p).  Some others are a bit better eg Galaxy Tab 4 at £117 vs 41,000 points (0.29p) or iPad Air 64GB Wi-Fi at £396 vs 119,210 points (0.33p).  In all of these cases, you are better off buying the item at Amazon on your Amex card and taking 0.4p per point of statement credit to pay it off.

I hope this gives you some ideas for using your points.  If you use them sensibly, the 20,000 points sign-up bonus on the free American Express Preferred Rewards Gold (see review) could be worth £200 – and in the very worst case (taking statement credit) you will still receive £80.

  • Metatone says:

Do MR points convert at a reasonable rate to Virgin?
    How long does it take?

    • mark2 says:

they convert at 1:1 and take a few days.
They can then be converted 1:1 into IHG points.

      • Nathan says:

1:1 for IHG is poor use though really.. 50,000 MR points = 1 night at say a Intercontinental worth £250 or 50,000 MR x 3 Club Carlson = 3 nights at a top end hotel = £750!

    • Pol says:

They convert immediately at a rate of 1:1

    • Rob says:

Virgin Atlantic is INSTANT if your accounts are already linked.

      • Adey says:

        Usually instant.

I’ve had my transfer held up a couple of times for large transactions (think it was 300,000 MR points both times). Took about three days, showed as pending.

For small amounts, the balance is there before I have time to log off Amex and log into FC!

  • Kipto says:

What is the least amount of reward points that can be exchanged for rewards ? I have 231 left which I cannot exchange for AVIOS or hotel points as the minimum points required for transferring is higher. I no longer use the card.

  • Corrine says:

I’m waiting for a MR – Avios or MR to Virgin bonus ! fingers crossed and hoping one will come along soon 🙂

    • Pol says:

      Me too. Long overdue.

      • Dan says:

Although still not a great deal, I received an email today from Hilton offering a 30% bonus on transfers of Hhonours points to avios.

Surely tesco or MR points are next on the cards?!

        • Rob says:

That is just weird! It is such a dreadful deal that there is no reason to do it, and if you WERE going to do, doesn’t Iberia still have a 50% better rate than BA anyway?

Can you forward it to me at raffles [at] headforpoints.co.uk? Thanks.

          • Dan says:

Agreed – seemed a particuarly odd deal to me!

            I’ve forwarded you the email.

  • Yanky says:

Is anyone still waiting for the points for adding supplementary cards to the platinum? I took out platinum cards for both my wife and I in February and applied for and received the supplementary cards before the deadline at the end of Feb, but still no sign of the bonus points for either of us. Anyone in a similar boat?

    • Rob says:

It has always taken at least 6 weeks I think.

    • BLT says:

Still waiting from end of January

      • Geoggy says:

Same here. I sent them a chasing message and was replied to immediately saying its 90 days.

I haven’t activated any of the cards

        • The_Real_A says:

I got the 10,000 without activation. Mine was from the batch before Christmas.

    • Ben says:

Also still waiting for 3 x 10,000 points from January and February for adding supp. cardholders.

    • Fenny says:

Yes. Applied for one for Ma. Arrived a week or so later, but still no points.

  • jac says:

Is there a list of melia hotels that participate?
When I called Melia to check on availability for a particular hotel before ordering the voucher, I was told there was not a single night available for the next 365 days which must mean the hotel can not be booked with MR point. Checking which hotels are available and when, it seems can only be done through the call centre. Does anybody managed to redeem points on melia?

    • Rob says:

Not that I know of, unfortunately.

      • RP says:

Melia seem to know very little about the promotion, you get different answers from different call agents. I only managed to book my room once we had AMex and melia on a 3 way call!

  • Stuart says:

What are people’s experience of transferring points to one Virgin account from multiple MR accounts? Ie can I transfer my wife’s MR points to my flying club account directly? Or is it possible via gifting or transferring once in a flying club account?

    • Rob says:

Transfers are expensive. You cannot have household accounts with Virgin either. No idea if they only do a surname check on transfers which would allow you to send them to her account.

      • Stuart says:

I’ve just added my details so will feedback. It worked with Hilton

  • Jeff says:

How long does an Amex MR > Hilton Honours transfer take? (account is already linked)

    Thanks

  • Kai says:

OT: Did anyone else receive the Carlson “Stay 2, Get 1 Free” offer? T&C says rates are available on Friday and Saturday check-ins only, but funny enough, I can’t find any availability except on Thursdays!

    • The_Real_A says:

I got the offer but to be honest i wont use it as i concentrate on the 2 for 1 / 4 for 2 offers from Gold level via AMEX plat card.

      • Kai says:

From my yesterday’s digging this 342 seems to have availability on almost every Thursday, whereas I could hardly find any 241 or 442 availability for most of the UK properties. Plus if you are staying exactly 3 nights, it doesn’t take a genius to see which offer is useful :p
