Get 1,000 free Avios in Iberia Plus if you have an Android phone

For the last couple of months, the taxi ordering app Hailo – which is now operating in Madrid and Barcelona – has been running a special promotion with Iberia Plus.

If you download the Hailo app and create an account, you get 1,000 free Avios in Iberia Plus.  No purchase required.

Full details can be found on the Iberia website here.

The snag is that the Hailo app knows where you are, thanks to the GPS system on your phone.  You are only able to add your Iberia Plus number to the app if you are in Spain at the time.

Thanks to readers Craig and Paul, we have found a solution.

You need an Android smartphone to do this.  It seems that you cannot fake the GPS co-ordinates of an iPhone without jailbreaking it, which is not recommended.

This is what you do:

If you don’t already have Hailo on your phone, download the app and create an account.  Use the same name as the name on your Iberia Plus account.

Download a free Android app called Fake GPS

Open Fake GPS and move the marker on the screen to Madrid in Spain

Re-open Hailo.  You see will a message on screen saying ‘Welcome to Madrid’.

Click on ‘Profile’ in the menu section of the app.  Scroll down to the bottom and you will see a menu item called ‘Iberia Plus’.  Click on this and enter your Iberia Plus number.

That’s it.  1,000 Avios points should arrive in your Iberia account.  They only seem to post them once a month so you may have a bit of a wait.

As well as getting you 1,000 Avios, this activity will also ‘activate’ a new Iberia Plus account and therefore allow you to move your points to and from ba.com and avios.com.

This offer closes on April 30th so I would get onto it ASAP.  You can find out more on iberia.com here.

If you happen to be in Spain before April 30th, you can also earn 10 Avios for every €8 you spend riding with Hailo.

Isn’t there an android emulator somewhere. Would that work?

    • Trevor says:

There are a couple of emulator types – one when the web browser plugin makes it look like and webservers to think like you’re on an Android device; two where you install software locally to emulate having an Android device. While you can manually set your location on some, the former won’t work as it won’t allow app installations. The latter should work if it’s a full emulator that allows app installations, tho this is more complex.

      • Bill says:

Finally got the Hailo app installed by searching with in the bluestacks app rather than clicking on the link above. I also managed to install Fake GPS however when I open Fake GPS nothing happens

        • Trevor says:

Glad you got Hailo installed. Bit puzzled by the Fake GPS though – maybe try another location faker as mentioned by another in these replies.

  • Gabbai says:

As of now the Iberia site says: “Download Hailo on your iPhone or Android smartphone, register your Iberia Plus card and we will welcome you with 400 Avios.”

  • The_Real_A says:

the days of me chasing quick points on Iberia are over. Im sick to death of chasing their crappy IT. Good look on them posting…

  • Robin says:

I don’t see anywhere on the profile part of the app, where to add my Iberia Plus number… Everything else worked fine thanks!

    • MIM says:

      That’s where I was getting confused…

When you use the Fake GPS to kid your phone to think it’s in Spain, then open Halo, new options appear on Halo – including the opportunity to add your Iberia ID

      • Robin says:

Thanks for the answer but I did that but still don’t have the additional options appearing on my profile to enter the IB membership even though Hailo thinks I’m in Spain 🙁

        • Rob says:

It is under ‘Profile’. You need to scroll down, at least on my phone the last 3-4 menu options – including Iberia’s box – were off the screen.

          • Robin says:

Thanks Raffles, it wasn’t an option under profile because I picked somewhere randomly in rural Spain where no cabs were available … After choosing Madrid where cabs existed, that seemed to activate the account settings, Iberia number entered successfully!! Thanks

  • Danksy says:

    Done… fingers crossed now!!

  • Trevor says:

I hope this doesn’t only work on new accounts…

  • pat butcher says:

I’ve got an android phone with no sim but can use wifi would that work?

    • Alan says:

As long as you can receive the SMS on another phone. You seem to be able to pick any country when signing up for entering your mobile number – I put my Oz one in and it worked fine.

      • pat butcher says:

Cool thanks ill use my proper iphone number when signing up for hailo.

    • Rob says:

No, because you cannot register your Hailo account without entering a code which is texted to your mobile number

      • John says:

Actually it does work. The text message consists of 3 digits which have to be entered into the hails app on the wifi connected android device, which can be SIM free as long as the mobile number you’ve supplied is active on any cellular connected phone (if you see what I mean).

        So go ahead Pat Butcher!

      • Alan says:

You could get the code texted to another non-Android device though and then enter it into the Android app… 😛

  • CC says:

Do you have to put the IB at the beginning or is it just he 8 digit number only? Silly question but I’m new to collecting with Iberia!

    • Thomas says:

I tried, and it says you should only use the 8 digits, so no IB at the front.

    • Alan says:

It seemed to accept it without the IB prefix when I entered it.

      • Thomas says:

I am on the iPhone app, so maybe different? I just happened to be in Spain today, and the iPhone app only accepts the numbers.
