How to get Starwood to offer you a ‘stay 1 night, get a free night anywhere’ deal

Back in 2013, I wrote an article encouraging people to sign up for Starwood Preferred Guest even if they had no interest in staying with them in the short term.  This was because Starwood had been sending out very generous offers to members who had never stayed with them.

(Starwood Preferred Guest is the loyalty scheme for Sheraton, Westin, W, Luxury Collection, Aloft and St Regis.)

At some point I signed up my Mum.  I honestly can’t remember whether it was then or whether it was earlier this year when I knew she had a Starwood stay coming up.  That is not helpful for the purposes of this story, I admit!

Last week she received this great offer from Starwood Preferred Guest:

Spg

The great thing is that she already has two Starwood stays booked, at a Sheraton and a Westin in Canada!

One of those is currently an award stay but I will be switching it over to a paid night.  It was a marginal call as to whether it was worth booking it as a reward night in the first place given the cash cost.  I can now put the points towards another night out at the SPG Suite at the O2 instead.

The two stays will generate two free night vouchers, valid until 31st December 2015.  They are valid at Category 1-5 Starwood properties.  This does restrict the places where they can be used but I am sure I can find some value from them.

I don’t know how often Starwood sends out offers like this and I don’t know how long you need to have had a dormant account in order to get one.  It may be worth registering a Starwood account to find out, however, either for yourself (if you are not already a member) or for a family member.

  1. I was signed up to SPG when I joined Amex Platinum, back in sometime around 2010-2011. No longer have the card but still SPG Gold. Never stayed with them. Would likely change that if they sent me this offer!

  2. My partner has an account which has never had any stays booked on it. It has been used to purchase points, though. Not sure if that is why no offer has appeared in his mail box.

Do you think the two booked stays have anything to do with your mum’s offer? It would be a bit perverse – but maybe they want to be sure they stick!

    • No. Both are currently booked from my account as I was hoping my status would carry over.

      • I don’t get it. You talk about your mum having two stays, your signing up your mum and her getting the offer. But the stays are both in your name??? So this means you’ll have to rebook both stays on her account, rather than just the one reward night? Or am I missing something?

  3. OT: Do you earn 10 pts per $1 spent for incidentals like car parking charges at IHG hotels abroad and if I pay it with my IHG visa card do I get 4pts per £1?

  4. I got this offer a couple of weeks after I signed up as a new user to SPG. Joined on 16th Feb and received the offer on 5th March. No activity on my account apart from submitting a Best Rate Guarantee which was rejected :-).

  5. Well not really how to get one then because nobody understands the science behind the offer

  6. Lady London says:

OT Hotels.com EML8JU 10% off till Sunday, bookings won’t count for their points scheme though.

    • AndyGWP says:

my email today was an offer of earning ‘double’ reward nights (book two nights, earn four nights in ‘Reward’ nights)…

Unfortunately it also has the small print of “excludes major chains” so will have to see what that actually leaves me with! :/

  7. Mark C says:

Stupid question but if you booked a one night stay at a cat 1 property could you then use the free night at a cat 5 property??

  8. James67 says:

My dad and me retain SPG accounts solely for transferring points to miles. None of us has stayed ever despite membership stretching back over a decade. We did not receive this offer or anything remotely similar. I think your mum just got lucky. I had to call service centre recently after being locked out my account. One of the security questions was where was my last stay; I was extremely embarassed to admit I never had, moreso when the agent said I was always welcome.

  9. For what its worth both my partner and I have had this offer. Both offered randomly after joining the scheme a year apart. I managed to activate mine through staying at the Sheraton Heathrow (seemingly the ‘best value’ property in the London area) and then staying two nights for free at W Barcelona (though i think this has since been recategorised to level 6). Very generous offer.

I’ve been a member for more than a year, probably two. Do not have any stays with them and haven’t received this offer.
