Thanks to Penguin Random House, I have five copies of Mark Vanhoenacker’s book ‘Skyfaring – A Journey with a Pilot’ to give away by midnight tonight.

As well as receiving enthusiastic reviews across the board, it was featured as a BBC Radio 4 ‘Book of the Week’ recently.

About ‘Skyfaring’

I reviewed Skyfaring a few weeks ago and was impressedYou can see my ‘Skyfaring’ review here.

Vanhoenacker is a British Airways Boeing 747 pilot and an established magazine and newspaper contributor.  Rather than repeating my own opinion, this is how the publisher describe a book which cuts across various genres:

“Think back to when you first flew. When you first left the Earth, and travelled high and fast above its turning arc. When you looked down on a new world, captured simply and perfectly through a window fringed with ice. When you descended towards a city, and arrived from the sky as effortlessly as daybreak.

In Skyfaring, airline pilot and flight romantic Mark Vanhoenacker shares his irrepressible love of flying, on a journey from day to night, from new ways of mapmaking and the poetry of physics to the names of winds and the nature of clouds. Here, anew, is the simple wonder that remains at the heart of an experience which modern travellers, armchair and otherwise, all too easily take for granted: the transcendent joy of motion, and the remarkable new perspectives that height and distance bestow on everything we love.”

If you are not lucky enough to win a copy today, it is available from all good bookshops (£16.99 RRP) and via Amazon (currently £11.89 with free postage).  It would make a good Father’s Day gift if your Dad shares your love of aviation.

This happens if you previously entered a competition using that email address and also made a Twitter entry, to get an extra entry. Although this time around there’s no extra entry from Tweeting, the competition software seems to require you to still complete the Twitter authorisation – I did so and my entry was confirmed.

Had to use my VPN connection to enter from overseas.

I still maintain that when Penguin and Random House merged, the new organisation should’ve been named “Random Penguin House”!!

  • GaryC says:

I had an unread copy that I gave away last week on a flight to JFK, as thanks to a BA 747 captain who invited me into the cockpit (whilst on the tarmac!). I’d asked if it was ok to take a picture, and it was a fan touch to be invited in for a decent chat. Maybe good karma will see me win a copy 🙂
