Virgin Atlantic and Delta open their own bar at the O2 Arena

There is clearly a super-hot salesman at the O2 Arena in Greenwich who knows exactly what to say to make the big travel companies sign on the dotted line.

First we had the American Express Invites lounge at the O2.  This is a private bar which must be pre-booked and which is restricted to American Express customers.  The drinks and snacks are not free but it is a superior environment to the main concourse at the arena.

Secondly we had the launch of the Starwood Preferred Guest suite which I reviewed here.  You can now redeem 20,000 SPG points from your hotel stays at Sheraton, Westin, W, Le Meridien etc (or from the Starwood American Express card or from Amex Membership Rewards points) for two hospitality tickets for a major concert.  I am there again later this month.

Virgin Delta bar O2

Virgin Atlantic and their joint venture partner, and 49% shareholder, Delta Air Lines have joined the party.

A 300-seat bar called NY-LON is opening at the O2 in July.  It is meant to be ‘a celebration of our transatlantic network’ and to ‘showcase our airlines world class service’.

Virgin has announced that Virgin Flying Club members will ‘benefit from a range of discounts and special offers’.  We will need to see exactly how this works in practice – given the scale of the bar it is unlikely that it will be exclusively for Delta and Virgin frequent flyers or it will be fairly empty a lot of the time.

It is worth noting that Virgin and Delta also have a hospitality suite in the arena although I have never seen seats offered up as a redemption option.

  • Save East Coast Rewards says:

I wonder if the offers will be for all Flying Club members or just those with status? As we can’t get tier points with train travel it would be nice to see if Virgin Trains East Coast could offer deals to their frequent travellers for this bar.

    • Blenz101 says:

You already know that the train operation is just a branding and is actually operated by Stagecoach so there will never be tier points offered from the frequent flyer scheme. Given for most people there is no competition on the route even Stagecoach have no incentive to try and entice people onto the train, for most living on the line it’s a necessity when your work brings you into London.

Flying Club benefits won’t be extended to frequent rail travellers in the same way they won’t be offered to someone who uses a Virgin Active gym.

      • Aeronaut says:

Just need to wait for the “Coaching Inn” bar at the O2 from Stagecoach, access to all holders of Megarider bus tickets… (but probably not VTEC frequent train travellers!)

  • Luc says:

I don’t there is an Amex lounge at the O2 any more? I looked for it recently but couldn’t find anything online. The Inivites page had been turned off…

    • Rob says:

Was there when I was at the O2 last month.

      • Luc says:

Sorry, my bad. It seems the Invites site was not loading on my laptop browser for some reason but I can see it on my phone.

      • Thomas says:

It’s there and it is very good. Was invited last Tuesday to a reception there ahead of a concert.

        • Howard says:

Anyone been to the Amex lounge recently? I linked my Amex card for the Paul Mcartney concert of O2. Had to queue for 75 mins to get tickets to enter the lounge.
