How to beat Tesco’s attempt to hide Hilton Clubcard redemption space

Tesco Clubcard has an interesting redemption option with Hilton Hotels in the UK and Ireland.  You can redeem your Clubcard points directly for a Hilton room rather than using Hilton HHonors points.

When I took a look at this again last week, I noticed that Tesco (or Hilton) has done something rather sneaky.  They have taken away the ability to check redemption space online which obliges you to ring the call centre.  Looking at recent reviews on the Clubcard website, this exposes you to a VERY hard sell to pay with cash if they cannot find Clubcard redemption space.

Luckily, I know how to get around this.

On the positive side, the deal is now improved in three ways:

There is no longer a 2-night minimum stay

You are no longer restricted to weekends

All Hilton brands now participate, although not every hotel in every brand

It is worth remembering that there is one impressive feature about this deal – ALL room categories are often available.  If you prefer larger rooms, club rooms or suites, this is a good way to get them.  It is far more flexible than using Hilton HHonors points.

How the Tesco deal works

You can see details of the Tesco deal here at their website.  There is also a PDF you can download.

Basically:

UK hotels only

All Hilton brands participate, although not all hotels (Hilton, Conrad, Doubletree, Hampton, Waldorf-Astoria etc)

You get 300% of the face value of your Tesco vouchers

No minimum stay requirement

Theoretically, a ‘minimum’ of two people must stay but I very much doubt that is enforceable!

Price you pay based on the cancellable Bed & Breakfast rate

Rooms are non-cancellable and non-refundable

Multiple room categories are usually available

You must book 14 days in advance

Once booked you need to post your Tesco vouchers to Hilton and they will send you a Hilton voucher back

Extras (other meals, mini bar, spa treatments etc) must be paid in cash

In theory you are meant to call Hilton Reservations to book.  In reality, this is not necessary.

You can search here at hilton.com for availability using Promotional Code PR20TC.

This code used to be shown on the PDF document explaining the deal on the Clubcard website.  It has now disappeared.  This makes it substantially more difficult to check for redemption space and to compare it with cash rates – which may be the point.

Indoor Pool Hilton St Georges Park

Let’s take a look for Hilton St George’s Park (photo above) for 11th to 13th September:

A standard room is £94

A standard room with breakfast is £109

A Tesco Clubcard standard room with breakfast is £109

Based on this pricing, the Tesco deal – given that you would only need £36 of vouchers per night – is a very good deal.  You genuinely get 3 x the face value as there are no cheaper rates available.

Tesco Clubcard rates are also available for ALL room categories including suites – even the Presidential Suite, which appears to be bigger than my house.

You won’t always get a deal as good as this, but as you can see it is a decent option.

(Using Hilton HHonors points may also work here but it is not a great deal.  I don’t recommend spending 40,000 points on a free room – that is just 0.25p per point.  £42 + 16,000 points via ‘cash and points’ is better but you can, elsewhere, get nearer to 0.5p per point this way.)

Conclusion

Tesco or Hilton have been very sneaky in taking away the option to check Hilton redemption availability online.  It seems that this is purely to get you on the phone so they can sell you something more expensive for cash!  Luckily, using the code above, you can now be prepared when you call.

Can you still book at the sale rates? I notice there’s no longer any mention of that in the fact sheet on the clubcard website -that could be very good value for the clubcard points imo.

    • Why not have a look??? There is a sale going on now – follow what Raffles says and then see!

Very useful post Rob, thanks. Unless I’m missing something, in example you give you would need £36.50 in vouchers. I have a couple of questions would be happy if anybody can answer please. If you receive vouchers online presumably you just print and send these? If face value of vouchers you need to use are higher than required is the change refunded to you via clubcard?

  3. There’s a Tesco boost deal coming 3rd August, not sure if Hilton is in it though….

    • Any idea if there will be a bonus for Virgin conversions please?
I want to convert some ClubCard points to Virgin for the first time (for onward conversion to IHG) and ironically this seems to be the first quarter when there is no bonus.

      • I’m in the same boat, but want to transfer to Hilton :)
I don’t think offers are announced until a bit closer to vouchers being sent out, which will be a few days I would have thought.
I went a bit over my £300 limit this quarter and have had some points taken off me by the looks of it. Although it’s a merged account and I had confirmation that it was £300 per member allowed per quarter.

        • I didn’t realise there was a restriction of £300 – not that I have ever reached that yet but good to know.

          • Jason, how do you manage to reach £300 per quarter – that’s a lot of spend through Tesco – I assume a lot with the gift cards and visa cards.

          • My credit card is linked to the account and it’s an old card so I get 1pt per £2 spent and I paid a couple of big bills.
I also did buy a few gift cards as well :)

        • strangely AwardWallet shows vouchers on my account nut ClubCard site does not!

          • I printed my clubcard vouchers this morning and then logged back in later and they had disappeared and reverted back to my previous months amount? Thought I would leave it till tomorrow to see if it sorted itself out before I call!

          • i would leave it a few days before calling them.

I have followed the instructions and not very many rooms yet that might be bookable with the Tesco code — possibly the London hotels are not included or not the central ones?. I’ve done flexible dates and gone forward 7 days at a time. I did find rooms in York but only Sundays with various prices from £128 upwards.

    • Plenty of London availability for Saturday 17 October, picked at random. Waldorf Hilton, Hilton Islington, Hilton Metropole, Hilton Hyde Park, Hilton Canary Wharf.

  6. M HOCKENHULL says:

Also reading the pdf once you have managed to do a booking you have to send you vouchers off to Hilton within 7 working days but when you order your vouchers from Tesco it can take 5 days to arrive – postal ones not ones by email. With so few rooms I am worried about ordering vouchers that I wont be able to use.

  7. Any idea on cancellation policies?

  8. Thanks!

Do you still get Diamond benefits on top?

  9. A couple of tips:

    – using the availability link produces a list of Hilton group hotels BUT the default list produces a load of Hiltons before possibly more relevant sub-brands are shown. In my case, I was looking for the Hampton Inn LGW (North Terminal). Top of the list was the Gatwick Hilton (South Terminal) followed by many other Hiltons before Doubletrees and Hamptons appeared, and sure enough, way down was the Hampton Inn LGW.

    – Tesco’s PDF shows an 0870 number for booking. The PDF was clearly prepared long before the recent change in regulations on showing the cost of calls. And for many, especially PAYG customers, such calls have become much more expensive since 1.7.15. A quick trip to http://www.saynoto0870.com produces equivalent free numbers: 0800 833775 and 0800 856 2851.
